Editor's Notes
4. Oxford
about 40k users (50-50 between students and academics?)
VM for rent
DBaaS - self-service
researchers can order a DB and fire it up - humanities researchers
Users did not have easy way to manage electronic data and were always
building their own db
benefit - centralize data - curate and manage it easier, reduces need
for private servers with self-built dbs under desks which then have to
be maintained,
process of getting a ordering machine, db built and set up used to take
several months - now it is several minutes - used to delay research
projects
colt - service provider for expansion.
need the private cloud since researchers want a lot of data kept
inhouse. but some researchers will need infrastructure and services
they can't provider so need to have expansion (e.g. via colt)
future business plan - to offer services to researchers outside oxford
at other educational institutions.
next step - finish production dc. they are linking up with vmware data
director.
