REPUTATION
OF NIGERIAN
UNIVERSITIES
VISION &
MISSION
“The way to gain a good reputation is to
endeavor to be what you desire to appear.”
2
- Socrates
The Times Higher Education (THE) publishes THE World Reputation
Rankings. According to the 2015 release, “It is based purely on subjective
opinion, but it is the informed opinion of leading thinkers across the world –
those who are best placed to understand quality teaching and research
across our universities”.
“The rankings are both an indicator of global prestige and a predictor of
future global prestige – because a top global reputation has real-world
effects, helping institutions to attract the best global talent, to forge strong
international partnerships and to attract investment.
The Roman wit Publilius Syrus famously wrote:
“A good reputation is more valuable than money.” But
in today’s academy, reputation is the currency: research
has shown that institutional standing is the top
consideration for academics when moving jobs, is vital
for the formation of international collaborations, and is
essential in persuading philanthropists to give and
industrial partners to invest.
Reputation is also fundamental to student decision-making. Research by recruitment
agents IDP has shown that a university’s good name is the prime consideration –
above tuition fees and even course content – for international students when
choosing study destinations.
REPUTATION BASICALLY IS HOW THE WORLD SEES YOU!
I came across a piece by Yang Fujia titled: WHAT MAKES A
GOOD UNIVERSITY? In Chapter 1: EXPERIENCE OF FIRST-RATE
UNIVERSITIES WITH INTERNATIONAL STANDING; item No. 4
which is the subject of this piece, says:
The National Universities Commissions regulates University education in
Nigeria, and should be in the best position to make publications that could
be used to determine the reputation of Nigerian Universities. This currently
does not formerly happen; therefore, Nigerian Students and their Parents
depend on international rankings of our Universities to sometimes make
career decision.
“FIRST-RATE UNIVERSITIES MUST HAVE
CLEARLY DEFINED MISSIONS AND
DISTINCTIVE QUALITIES”
Since great organization are sometimes known by their Vision & Mission; this
piece is an attempt to know if one can determine the reputation of Nigerian
universities from their VISION & MISSION. How SIMPLE, CLEAR and CONCISE
are these VISIONS and MISSIONS? Are they available and publicly accessible?
First, let us begin with VISIONS / MISSIONS of some highly reputable

Philosophy
The underlying philosophy is that the average Nigerian farmer should have easy
access to the fruits of scientific agriculture. This means that the University
scientific community must work on the key practical problems of village farmers.
Also, the students, to become useful and effective extension agents must be
adequately exposed to the discipline of practical farm planning, production and
marketing and a period of supervised farming internship at the village level. The
basic philosophy then is the democratization and liberalization of the scientific
transformation of Nigerian agriculture, with small-scale farmers in the vanguard.

Nigerian universities vision and mission

  • 2. “The way to gain a good reputation is to endeavor to be what you desire to appear.” 2 - Socrates
  • 3. The Times Higher Education (THE) publishes THE World Reputation Rankings. According to the 2015 release, “It is based purely on subjective opinion, but it is the informed opinion of leading thinkers across the world – those who are best placed to understand quality teaching and research across our universities”. “The rankings are both an indicator of global prestige and a predictor of future global prestige – because a top global reputation has real-world effects, helping institutions to attract the best global talent, to forge strong international partnerships and to attract investment. The Roman wit Publilius Syrus famously wrote: “A good reputation is more valuable than money.” But in today’s academy, reputation is the currency: research has shown that institutional standing is the top consideration for academics when moving jobs, is vital for the formation of international collaborations, and is essential in persuading philanthropists to give and industrial partners to invest. Reputation is also fundamental to student decision-making. Research by recruitment agents IDP has shown that a university’s good name is the prime consideration – above tuition fees and even course content – for international students when choosing study destinations. REPUTATION BASICALLY IS HOW THE WORLD SEES YOU!
  • 4. I came across a piece by Yang Fujia titled: WHAT MAKES A GOOD UNIVERSITY? In Chapter 1: EXPERIENCE OF FIRST-RATE UNIVERSITIES WITH INTERNATIONAL STANDING; item No. 4 which is the subject of this piece, says: The National Universities Commissions regulates University education in Nigeria, and should be in the best position to make publications that could be used to determine the reputation of Nigerian Universities. This currently does not formerly happen; therefore, Nigerian Students and their Parents depend on international rankings of our Universities to sometimes make career decision. “FIRST-RATE UNIVERSITIES MUST HAVE CLEARLY DEFINED MISSIONS AND DISTINCTIVE QUALITIES” Since great organization are sometimes known by their Vision & Mission; this piece is an attempt to know if one can determine the reputation of Nigerian universities from their VISION & MISSION. How SIMPLE, CLEAR and CONCISE are these VISIONS and MISSIONS? Are they available and publicly accessible?
