8. • Social media has had a tremendous impact on our culture, in business, marketing and
politics.

revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on the Web.

negative, that social media has had on our
society?
Intro…
9. International Relations and Politics
• Politicians have been utilizing social media for campaign purposes and interactions with the masses
for various objectives such as maintaining a good public image.
• The masses have been able to utilize social media as a platform for political discussions and express
their support and opposition to political causes/figures.
• Social media has been able to break diplomatic and bureaucratic barriers that existed before
between the masses and top public officials.

Removal of bureaucratic barriers
10. “Messages no longer flow solely from the few to the many, with little
interactivity. Now, messages also flow from the many to the many,
multimodally and interactively.
By disintermediating government and corporate control of communication,
horizontal communication networks have created a new landscape of social
and political change.”
11. • In past few years we have seen a huge rise in social media usage in arrangement, coordination and
information distribution in activities such as protests.
• This has made many governments moving to banning some of the biggest social media sites when faced
with social revolts.
Social media usage accelerated
Egypt’s revolution and it cemented it’s
position as a tool that can influence
change.
“Social media has
helped social
movements pose more
of a challenge to state
power.”
12. Impact on Business
• Companies are now using social media in marketing, advertising and customer care support.
• Interactions and feedback from customers help businesses to understand the market, and fine-tune
their products and strategies much quicker that ever before.
• Online marketing efforts can be easily tweaked, adjusted and replaced way quicker compared to the
traditional ones.
• Social media is a cheaper and a more effective marketing and customer care platform
• …it is also becoming “not a choice” for many businesses as many people share their experiences on
social media after using a product or service. Most of the time they share if they had a negative
experience, hence a brand has to be there to ensure it offers quick support/resolution and protect its
brand image.
13. Sales Recruiting
Public
Relations
Marketing

Society and Socialization
16. A False Sense of Connection
• Social media sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful
relationships we foster in the real world, and the numerous casual relationships formed through social
media. (*Steven Strogatz,Cornell University)
• If we are not careful this will weaken our important and meaningful real life relationships.
Privacy concerns
• Social networking sites encourage users to be more public about their private lives.
• Users can easily release information about their private lives on social media that they wouldn’t
release in face to face communication
Decreased Productivity
• Social media is becoming number one source of distraction to employees during working hours.
Society and Socialization - Challenges
17. “Social media has its advantages and drawbacks.
It is up to each user to use social sites wisely to
enhance their professional and social life”
