4. MALC Beginning…
1955, Leper colony off McLeod Road, in Karachi, discovered.
1956, a tiny dispensary – the first Leprosy clinic made of packing material,
opened.
1960, Dr. Ruth Pfau arrived and launched Leprosy Control Program in Pakistan.
1963, the shabby dispensary moved to an 80-bedded hospital in Saddar.

1965, the first batch of paramedical workers trained in Leprosy.
1967, Leprosy Control Program was undertaken in Provinces
1975, the Program initiated Combined Leprosy-TB Program for Azad Kashmir.
1981, MALC gained recognition as National Training Institute for Leprosy
1983, Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) for Leprosy cure introduced.
1986, initiated Eye Care Program in Balochistan
1993, program initiated primary eye care for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
1996, Leprosy Controlled in Pakistan.
1998, Leprosy Control Program moved to Leprosy elimination.
2000, introduced the Triple Merger Program at Provincial and Regional level.
2002, introduced the Expanded Leprosy Control Program at National level and
actively persuaded Corporate sector for funding.

2005 AND 2006, MALC was involved in an extensive Earthquake Relief,
Reconstruction and
Rehabilitation Project in Azad Kashmir and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
started exploring new avenues in Community Development.
2008, began the first phase of Leprosy integration into the General Health
Services.
Skin diseases included in Triple Merger Program
2010, actively participated in the Flood Relief, Reconstruction and
Rehabilitation Project countrywide.
2011 TO 2015, from Leprosy Control to Leprosy elimination alongwith TB
& Blindness Control,
Skin diseases and Community Development – the journey is On…
