Emergency Procedures Training For
  Simpson University Employees
                     Last Updated Oct. 31, 2012

This Presentation will provide you with procedures and
  information concerning potential emergency situations
             on the Simpson University campus.
SU Emergency Procedures
• Emergency procedures compiled within this presentation
can also be found in the Emergency Preparedness Flip Chart
and the evacuation plans located in each campus building.
• Sample pages shown below:
Fire Emergency
Fire alarm systems are installed in university buildings. The systems
are monitored by SU Campus Safety and a local safety company.

                                       FIRE
• If you notice fire, smoke, or any evidence of fire, activate the building
fire alarm. Call Campus Safety at extension 2911 to report the location.
Call 911 to give the location and description of the fire.
• Close all doors and windows in the vicinity of the fire.
• When a fire alarm sounds, leave the building through the nearest exit.
Your supervisor and Campus Safety will assist you.
• DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS.
• Once outside, proceed to the designated gathering point listed on the
Emergency Procedure Flip Chart. Stay there. Immediately notify
emergency personnel of any injured persons and individuals remaining
    in the affected building.
• Do not return to an evacuated building unless told to do so by
    emergency personnel.
Earthquakes
In the Event of an Earthquake:
     1. When shaking is felt:
         • Get under desk, table, door arch or stairwell.
         • Stay away from large windows, shelving systems or
           tall partitions.

    1. After shaking stops:
        • Survey your immediate area for trapped persons
          and ruptured utilities.
        • Evacuate to your designated assembly area.
        • Inform your supervisor or Campus Safety at
          extension 2911 of any damage.
Weather Emergency
• Weather emergencies may occur in the form of floods,
tornadoes, thunderstorms, heavy snow, hail, or lightning.
The most important factor when dealing with severe
weather is early detection. The university will notify the
campus community via email, news broadcasts, by calling 1-
888-SIMPSON and/or by posting on the Simpson University
home page if operations will be suspended due to inclement
    weather.

• If operations are suspended after the beginning of a regular
business day, the administration may decide to close the
university early. When such determination is made, you will
be notified through the proper channels.
Hostile Intruder
Active Shooter Safety Tips
• Remain calm.
• If it is possible to flee the area safely, do so. Notify anyone you may
encounter to exit the building immediately. Evacuate to a safe area
away from the danger and take protective cover. Stay there until
    assistance arrives. Otherwise:
     • Call 911 (on campus phone 9-911) and campus safety (530-941-7592)
         with your location, if possible.
     • If you cannot get through by phone and have email or text message
capability, email Campus Safety at campussafety@simpsonu.edu.
Campus Safety will immediately receive and respond to the message.
     • Seek protective cover for yourself and any others (concrete walls, thick
desks, etc.) Keep occupants calm, quiet and out of sight. Mute or turn
         off cell phone ringers.
     • Lock all doors and windows to your classroom.
     • Do not admit anyone into the classroom once the door is locked.
     • Do not leave the classroom, unless no longer safe to remain.
     • Do Not approach emergency responders-let them come to you.
     • Stay in lockdown until an administrator gives the “all clear” signal.
Safe Walk Program
Simpson Campus Safety provides a safe-walk service to and
from the parking lots upon request. Call the Campus Safety
cell phone at 530-941-7592 or call extension 2911 from a
campus phone to request this service.

Safety Whistle Program
• Whistles are made available to all students and employees.
Any member of the Simpson community who would like to
participate should contact the Campus Safety office in the
Owen Center. We encourage the use of these whistles both
as a deterrent to any potential criminal activity and as a
means of drawing maximum attention in the event of an
    emergency.
• If you hear a whistle:
     • Call Campus Safety. Report location and nature of trouble.
     • Blow your whistle.
     • Move carefully toward the first whistle, and (keeping a safe distance)
         continue blowing.
     • Render first aid to the person soliciting help.
     • Call 911 for assistance (9-911 if calling from a campus phone).

     • Remember: These whistles are for emergency use only.
Misuse will result in a heavy fine.
Individual Responsibility
• Here at Simpson University, the safety and security for our
students, faculty and staff- as well as the university’s campus in
    general- is our mission.
• The Campus Safety Department has the primary responsibility
for maintaining a safe and secure environment at Simpson
    University.
• The department seeks to promote mutual cooperation and
conflict resolution by establishing a positive social atmosphere
where effective learning can take place.
• However, we must also help individuals in our community to
learn how to make responsible decisions that will prepare them
for the hazards they may face in our world today and
    tomorrow.
• With that in mind, we encourage you to learn about and utilize
the additional resources and services shown on the next page,
    to help you stay safe.
Reporting Emergencies
• Emergency police help is readily available from the Redding Police
Department by dialing 911 (9-911 from campus phone).
• Campus Safety may be reached by dialing 2911 from an ON
CAMPUS telephone. OFF CAMPUS dial 530-941-7592.
• When calling, stay calm and carefully explain the problem and
    location to Campus Safety.
• Do not hang up until told to do so.
• Keep calm. Keep others calm.
• If you cannot get through by phone and have email or text message
capability, you can contact Campus Safety at
    campussafety@simpsonu.edu. Campus Safety dispatch will
immediately receive and respond to the message.
