We'll also discuss asynchronous, non-blocking microservices and examine some of the more straightforward solutions for building them. If you're looking for a complex architecture guide, this ain't it. It's microservice event-sourcing and async message for the 99%.

This is the talk I gave at JFokus 2016 on event-driven microservices. This presentation looks at the importance of events and the role that they play in applications. We describe how events are a key application integration mechanism and how they are used by applications to communicate with the outside world. You will learn how the microservices inside a system can use events to maintain data consistency. We discuss how easy it is to implement both of these mechanisms by developing your core business logic using an event-centric approach known as event sourcing.

Very large portion of the world’s business critical systems are considered to be ‘legacy’ –and so is the code underpinning them (ie COBOL, PASCAL, C, to name a few). Although in many cases it is the case that these systems are robust, stable and fit for the main purpose they were originally built, they aren’t flexible and scalable enough to support emerging requirements mainly derived from a more demanding ‘always on the move’ and ‘always connected’ user. These systems struggle to meet these demands mainly because of the ‘monolithic’ approach on which they were built and the complexity hidden in millions of lines of code that is only understood a very few hand-full of people that still remain active from the teams that several years ago developed these systems. In almost an equal amount there have also been thousands of failed attempts to modernise these legacy systems. The ‘eating the elephant’ in one go approach certainly didn’t work, and the traditional SOA approach alone although worked till certain extend, it also fell short when it came down to addressing specific requirements around scalability and platform/service inter-dependencies. In this presentation I will talk about how a legacy modernisation framework based on Microservice Architecture (MSA) in conjunction with some other known SOA patterns (ie. ESB, API Gateway), can be applied to ‘eat the elephant one piece at the time’ but most importantly ‘without getting indigestion’

Event sourcing persists each entity as a sequence of state changing event. An entity’s current state is derived by replaying the events. Event sourcing is a great way to implement event-driven micro services. When one service updates an entity, the new events are consumed by other services, which then update their own state. In this talk we describe how to implement business logic using a domain model that is based on event sourcing. You will learn how to write functional, immutable domain models in Scala. We will compare and contrast a hybrid OO/FP design with a purely functional approach. You will learn how Domain Driven Design concepts such as bounded contexts and aggregates fit in with event-driven microservices.

While this ensures that services are loosely coupled it creates a problem: how do you maintain consistency across services without using 2PC? Microservices are an essential enabler of agility but developing and deploying them is a challenge. In order for microservices to be loosely coupled,each service must have its own datastore. This makes it difficult to maintain data consistency across services. Deploying microservices is also a complex problem since an application typically consists of 10s or 100s of services, written in a variety of languages and frameworks. In this presentation, you will learn how to solve these problems by using an event-driven architecture to maintain data consistency and by using Docker to simplify deployment.

This is the talk that the Kenny Bastani and I gave at JavaOne 2016. When you’re building JVM applications in a microservice architecture, managing state becomes a distributed systems problem. Instead of being able to manage state as transactions inside the boundaries of a single monolithic application, a microservice must be able to manage consistency by using transactions that are distributed across a network of many different applications and databases. This session explores the problems of data consistency and high availability in JVM-based microservices and how to use event sourcing to solve these problems.

Today, there are several trends that are forcing application architectures to evolve. Users expect a rich, interactive and dynamic user experience on a wide variety of clients including mobile devices. Applications must be highly scalable, highly available and run on cloud environments. Organizations often want to frequently roll out updates, even multiple times a day. Consequently, it's no longer adequate to develop simple, monolithic web applications that serve up HTML to desktop browsers.In this talk we describe the limitations of a monolithic architecture. You will learn how to use the scale cube to decompose your application into a set of narrowly focused, independently deployable services. We will also discuss how an event-based approach addresses the key challenges of developing applications with this architecture.

SOA, service-oriented architectures, burst on the scene in the new millennium as the latest technology to support application growth. In concert with the Web, SOA ushered in new paradigms for structuring enterprise applications. At the Forward Internet Group in London, we are implementing SOA in unusual ways. Rather than a few, businessrelated services being implemented per the original vision, we have developed systems made of myriads of very small, usually shortlived services. In this workshop, we will start by exploring the evolution of SOA implementations by the speaker. In particular, lessons learned from each implementation will be discussed, and reapplication of these lessons on the next implementation. Challenges (and even failures) will be explicitly identified. We will arrive at a model of the current systems: An environment of very small services that are loosely coupled into a complex system. he Domain Model pattern is a great way to develop complex business logic. Unfortunately, a typical domain model is a tangled, birds nest of classes. It can’t be decomposed into microservices. Moreover, business logic often relies on ACID transactions to maintain consistency. Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem: aggregates. An aggregate is an often overlooked modeling concept from the must read book Domain Driven Design. In this talk you will learn how aggregates enable you to develop business logic for the modern world of microservices and NoSQL. We will describe how to use aggregates to design modular business logic that can be partitioned into microservices. You will learn how aggregates enable you to use eventual consistency instead of ACID. We will describe the design of a microservice that is built using aggregates, and Spring Cloud.

It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged.
