1. Let Others Lead Small Lives, But Not You..
by S.W. Seeds | on February 16, 2013
“Let others lead small lives, but not you… Let others argue over small things, but
not you… Let others cry over small hurts, but not you… Let others leave their
future in someone else’s hands, but not you.” – Jim Rohn
Wow! What a powerful quote! Jim Rohn was an American entrepreneur, author and
motivational speaker. His rags to riches story played a large part in his work, which
influenced others in the personal development industry. Many great motivational
speakers and writers credit Jim Rohn for their continued success!
The part that speaks to me the loudest, is the last sentence. “Let others leave their
future in someone else’s hands, but not you.”
Perhaps if I had read that quote several years ago, it wouldn’t have taken me so long
to become happy! Just to clarify, when I say happy, I mean happy with where I am in
my career. And, I am gloriously happy with my new career!
I have always dreamed of being in a position of helping others. To be paid to do this, is
truly a dream come true! It all transpired simply by deciding that I was no longer going
to leave my future in someone else’s hands.
It sounds simple enough, not leaving my future in the hands of others, but exactly
what does that mean? One could argue that by setting goals and following them
would suffice.
If the goals set are not hindered or dictated by someone else, then that is absolutely
correct. However, in my experience, that is rarely the case.
Looking back on the past 35 years, when I was managing top producing businesses,
it was always under the dictation of a corporate office or at the very least district
management. While I certainly had some flexibility within company guidelines, it still
was influenced by those same guidelines.
It wasn’t until I became my own boss that I gained the freedom to 100% decide on
what I would do and how or when I would do it! In all fairness though, to some
2. degree, I am quite sure that it was all those years of having my hands tied, so to
speak, that molded me into the businessman I am today!
Not only do we learn what TO do from others, experience also teaches us what NOT
to do as well! Sometimes it’s the latter that is the most advantageous in our education.
I have to be completely honest though. I would have much rather someone simply
take me under their wing and show me the ropes rather than try to make a game out
of it and show me what I did wrong, or rather what they didn’t agree with.
That brings me back to today. My company is based on not only the theory that
knowledge is power, but that knowledge is all the more powerful when it is shared
with others who can team up together!
It seems that the majority of upper management figures, I worked with, certainly
agreed with knowledge is power. They just wanted to keep the knowledge to
themselves to make them feel superior and powerful!
I honestly believe that many times this happens when people are insecure with their
position. This brings me back to leaving the future in someone else’s hands!
Being my own boss, I have absolutely no reason to feel insecure about who I am or
what I am doing. I am in total control of my destiny! I answer to know one, but me.
I know there are hundreds of thousands of individuals, who are hard working and
sincere, who would love the chance to unfold their wings and fly. They simply don’t
know how to get started or are afraid to try for fear of failure.
That was me for so many years. You have to reach a point to where your faith
outweighs your fears and you let someone, who is trustworthy and has the
experience, guide you to greatness!
At S.W. Seeds Marketing, we can help guide you to greatness. It all starts by making
