3. What is Progesterone?
• Progesterone is an endogenous steroid
hormone involved in menstrual cycle
,pregnancy & embryogenesis of humans and
other species.Formed in
• CORPUS LEUTEUM
• PLACENTA
• TESTES
• ADRENAL CORTEX

5. FUNCTIONS
Hormone appears after ovulation; causes:
• Development of endometrium
• Inc. Glycogen, mucin & fat in lining epithelial
cells, supresses LH
• Stimulates mammary glands(alveolar system)
• Inc. basal temperature( inc. BMR)
• In large doses,causes androgenic effects
• Does not retain Na Cl and water

6. FUNCTIONS
• During pregnancy,it decreases mother’s auto
immune response
• Drop in progesterone levels initiates labor
• Progesterone supports normal development
of neurons,protective effect on damaged
brain tissue(due to inc. estrogen)
• Enhances functions of serotonin receptors in
brain
