Introduced in 1982 by Dr. Charles Wiseman
and primarily used within
the field of information system, strategic
information system are created in response to
business initiatives to provide a competitive
advantage.

• Strategic information systems are always systems that are
developed in response to corporate business initiative.
• They mechanize operations for better efficiency, control, and

4. Financial systems are the basic computerisation of the accounting,
budgeting, and finance operations of an organization.
Operational systems, or services systems, help control the details of
the business.
Strategic systems are those that link business and computer
strategies
• They are the systems where new business strategies has been
developed and they can be realized using Information
Technology.
• They may be systems where new computer technology has been
made available on the market, and planners with
an entrepreneurial spirit perceive how the new capabilities can
quickly gain competitive advantage.

At each level of the information pyramid there are also information systems which
deal specifically with that type of information.

6. Characteristics of strategic IS
Some characteristics of strategic IS planning are:
Main task: strategic/competitive advantage, linkage
to business strategy.
Key objective: pursuing opportunities, integrating IS
and business strategies
Direction from: executives/senior management and
users, coalition of users/management and information
systems.
Main approach: entrepreneurial (user innovation),
multiple (bottom-up development, top down analysis,
etc.) at the same time.
