• Don’t focus so much on the textbook
• Have students do research themselves
• Studies find this to be a greater predictor of
  college readiness than IQ scores
• Students develop higher learning through
  cross-text reading
How do we get it done?
Use a variety of sources:
• Trade books
• Journals
• Articles
• Internet
Where is the Inquiry?
• Have the students question the material they
  are reading
• Within a category let them have learning
  choices
• Let students value the material by applying
  text to their lives. (how does the information
  they are learning affect them?)
• Gradually increase the complexity of the text
• Have the students conduct research
Follow up and Discussion Questions
• How do you manage classroom time
  incorporating journals, textbooks and other
  cross-text material?
• How do you correlate inquiry based learning
  to Regents standards when students are
  controlling the learning?
• How can we encourage social motivation
  through dialog without it leading to students
  engaging in chit chatting behavior?

  • 4. Dr. Mahar’s Presentation Key Points: • Don’t focus so much on the textbook • Have students do research themselves • Studies find this to be a greater predictor of college readiness than IQ scores • Students develop higher learning through cross-text reading
  • 5. How do we get it done? Use a variety of sources: • Trade books • Journals • Articles • Internet
  • 6. Where is the Inquiry? • Have the students question the material they are reading • Within a category let them have learning choices • Let students value the material by applying text to their lives. (how does the information they are learning affect them?) • Gradually increase the complexity of the text • Have the students conduct research
  • 7. Follow up and Discussion Questions • How do you manage classroom time incorporating journals, textbooks and other cross-text material? • How do you correlate inquiry based learning to Regents standards when students are controlling the learning? • How can we encourage social motivation through dialog without it leading to students engaging in chit chatting behavior?
