Finding Themes in Literature
A message from the
authorā€¦
The Readerā€™s Job
ā€¢ Part of your job as a reader is to understand
what the author is trying to say.
ā€¢ Writers seldom come out and tell
you, ā€œHey, Reader! THIS is what I want you to
GET from my writing.ā€
ā€¢ You, as the reader, must make inferences and
draw conclusions about what the author is trying
to express.
HEY! Whatā€™s the BIG IDEA?!!
ā€¢ Of a literary work, that is!
ā€¢ Themes are usually about BIG IDEAS. For
example:
ā€“ Freedom
ā€“ Trust
ā€“ Friendship
ā€“ Good vs. Evil
ā€“ And much, much more.
So, what is theme?
ā€¢ Theme is the message from the author.
ā€¢ Themes can be found everywhere:
ā€“ Literature
ā€“ Art
ā€“ Movies
ā€¢ The theme of a fable is its moral.
ā€¢ The theme of a parable is its teaching.
ā€¢ The theme of a piece of literature is its view
about life and how people behave.
THIS is THEMEā€¦
ļ±Theme is the underlying meaning of the story.
ļ±It is a universal Truth.
ļ±It is a significant statement the story is making
about society, human nature or the human
condition.
Get to the POINT!
ā€¢ Theme is NOT the TOPIC.
ā€¢ Theme IS the POINT being made about the
TOPIC.
ā€¢ Theme is a statement about LIFE.
ā€¢ A GOOD theme teaches a VALUABLE lesson
about life.
Theme and Idea
ā€¢ The theme of a literary work is its underlying
central idea or the generalization it
communicates about life.
Themeā€¦the meaning of life?
ā€¢ The theme expresses the authorā€™s opinion or
raises a question about human nature of the
meaning of human experience.
Words of the Wise
ā€¢ At times the authorā€™s theme may not confirm or
agree with your own beliefs.
ā€¢ Even then, if skillfully written, the work will still
have a theme that illuminates some aspects of
true human experience.
Findingā€¦Common Ground
ā€¢ The authorā€™s task is to communicate on a
common ground with the reader.
ā€¢ Although the particulars of your experience may
be different from the details of the story, the
general underlying truths behind the story may
be just the connection that both you and the
writer are seeking.
You and Theme
ā€¢ An understanding of theme is dependent upon
oneā€™s previous experience of life and literature.
ā€¢ At the same time, theme in literature can enlarge
oneā€™s understanding of life.
Be aware:
ā€¢ The theme never completely explains the story.
ā€¢ It is only one of the elements that are needed to
gain full understanding of the story.
ā€¢ Literary texts can have more than one theme.
Finding the Theme
ā€¢ What is the topic or ā€œBIG
IDEAā€ of the work?
ā€¢ What do the characters
say or do that relates to
the topic?
ā€¢ What do these things tell
you that are important to
learn about life?
ā€¢ The topic isā€¦
ā€¢ The BIG IDEA isā€¦
ā€¢ The characters sayā€¦
ā€¢ The characters doā€¦
ā€¢ The text tells meā€¦
ā€¢ It is important toā€¦

happens in the story?

HOW TO WRITE A THEMATIC
STATEMENT
Creating general thematic
statements
ā€¢ Example: Courage
ā€¢ Courage allows people to attempt difficult
tasks in their lives even when the
possibility of failure is very high.
(Thematic idea) (assertion about the thematic idea)
(qualifying clause: when, because, unless, even, so that, whether, if, etc.)
You write one!
ā€¢ ______________ ________________________
________________________________________
(Thematic idea) (assertion about the thematic idea)
(qualifying clause: when, because, unless, even so that, whether, if, etc.)
Allusions and thematic
statements
ā€¢ Example:
Allusion: the Garden of Eden
Thematic Idea: Temptation
The reference to the Garden of Eden suggests
that giving in to temptation may result in
tragedy even if the action seems to be small and
insignificant.
You try one!
ā€¢ Example:
Allusion: ________________
Thematic Idea: ________________
ā€¢ The reference to __________________suggests
that____________________________________
________________________________________
Creating thematic statements
specific to a literary work.
ā€¢ Think of a novel, play or short story you know
well. Think of the thematic ideas that are
present in that piece of literature. Choose a
thematic idea word (you may use the resource
list) and complete the fill-in-the-blank statement.
The assertion in this statement will be directly
related to the ideas presented in the work of
literature.
Creating thematic statements
specific to a literary work.
ā€¢ Example:
ā€¢ Work: Cold Sassy Tree
ā€¢ Thematic idea: death
ā€¢ In Cold Sassy Tree, Olive Ann Burns presents the
idea that death is not only an ending but also a
chance for a new beginning when those who are
still alive take the opportunity to learn from it.
Creating thematic statements
specific to a literary work.
ā€¢ Work: __________________
ā€¢ Thematic idea: _________________
ā€¢ Model: In____________, ___________ presents the
idea that ___________________________________
_______________________________________
__________________________________________
(Name of literary work) (Name of author)
(assertion about what the literature teaches the reader about the thematic idea)
(qualifying clause: when, because, unless, even so that, whether, if, etc.)

Finding themes in literature ppt

  • 1. Finding Themes in Literature A message from the authorā€¦
  • 2. The Readerā€™s Job ā€¢ Part of your job as a reader is to understand what the author is trying to say. ā€¢ Writers seldom come out and tell you, ā€œHey, Reader! THIS is what I want you to GET from my writing.ā€ ā€¢ You, as the reader, must make inferences and draw conclusions about what the author is trying to express.
  • 3. HEY! Whatā€™s the BIG IDEA?!! ā€¢ Of a literary work, that is! ā€¢ Themes are usually about BIG IDEAS. For example: ā€“ Freedom ā€“ Trust ā€“ Friendship ā€“ Good vs. Evil ā€“ And much, much more.
  • 4. So, what is theme? ā€¢ Theme is the message from the author. ā€¢ Themes can be found everywhere: ā€“ Literature ā€“ Art ā€“ Movies ā€¢ The theme of a fable is its moral. ā€¢ The theme of a parable is its teaching. ā€¢ The theme of a piece of literature is its view about life and how people behave.
  • 5. THIS is THEMEā€¦ ļ±Theme is the underlying meaning of the story. ļ±It is a universal Truth. ļ±It is a significant statement the story is making about society, human nature or the human condition.
  • 6. Get to the POINT! ā€¢ Theme is NOT the TOPIC. ā€¢ Theme IS the POINT being made about the TOPIC. ā€¢ Theme is a statement about LIFE. ā€¢ A GOOD theme teaches a VALUABLE lesson about life.
  • 7. Theme and Idea ā€¢ The theme of a literary work is its underlying central idea or the generalization it communicates about life.
  • 8. Themeā€¦the meaning of life? ā€¢ The theme expresses the authorā€™s opinion or raises a question about human nature of the meaning of human experience.
  • 9. Words of the Wise ā€¢ At times the authorā€™s theme may not confirm or agree with your own beliefs. ā€¢ Even then, if skillfully written, the work will still have a theme that illuminates some aspects of true human experience.
  • 10. Findingā€¦Common Ground ā€¢ The authorā€™s task is to communicate on a common ground with the reader. ā€¢ Although the particulars of your experience may be different from the details of the story, the general underlying truths behind the story may be just the connection that both you and the writer are seeking.
  • 11. You and Theme ā€¢ An understanding of theme is dependent upon oneā€™s previous experience of life and literature. ā€¢ At the same time, theme in literature can enlarge oneā€™s understanding of life.
  • 12. Be aware: ā€¢ The theme never completely explains the story. ā€¢ It is only one of the elements that are needed to gain full understanding of the story. ā€¢ Literary texts can have more than one theme.
  • 13. Finding the Theme ā€¢ What is the topic or ā€œBIG IDEAā€ of the work? ā€¢ What do the characters say or do that relates to the topic? ā€¢ What do these things tell you that are important to learn about life? ā€¢ The topic isā€¦ ā€¢ The BIG IDEA isā€¦ ā€¢ The characters sayā€¦ ā€¢ The characters doā€¦ ā€¢ The text tells meā€¦ ā€¢ It is important toā€¦
