John Stewart: Three Books - A summary
1. Three Books.
We live in a complicated age that’s swamped by regulation. Indeed, a
mechanistic world where human contact often is frustrated. One might say, the fresh
air of simplicity is more than welcome when it’s found. And this is what I hope, and
certainly tried to portray, in all three books.
Visitors, came as a sudden inspiration, a way to put the natural economic law
in a plain and entertaining mode. A si-fi fiction with enlightened Aliens arriving from
another planet rich in wisdom and example. Their planet’s economic system and
philosophic insight, inspired admiration, but it also fired a jealous hatred. Meantime
it’s hoped the reader will enjoy an entertaining read,
The President -- The President is introduced to the teaching of Henry George,
through the agency of his limo driver. He’s hooked and then proceeds to introduce
three questions in his speeches. He doesn’t offer answers but awaits reaction. The
questions are:- (1) WHAT IS LOCATION VALUE? (2) WHO CREATES IT? (3)
TO WHOM DOES IT BELONG? These simple questions run throughout the story.
Again an entertaining and a humorous read, one hopes. Here once more simplicity
rules.
Prime Minister -- A much more detailed book, featuring a young PM heading
a national government in a time of crisis and the problems of introducing and
applying a land location levy. The problems of application and transition are real and
daunting, but the PM counters thus. ‘This principle is pure reason, and when it
awakens in the hearts of humankind, the light of reason shines…When you’re
speaking in the Commons, the world will be listening. Don’t think that you’re too
small, or that you’re doing it – that’s even worse. Know that it’s the principle that
will touch the hearts of men.’
It’s not by clever slide-rule calculations that the human heart is moved. As
Henry George himself indicated. The mass of people are not moved by that but in
terms of right and wrong -- in other words, the ethical and moral standpoint. The
commandment to love your neighbour is practical.
