3. Introduction
In the last two or more months we have been on a study
series aimed at sustaining or strengthening the Church
leadership
Today’s teaching continues in that drive as we discuss about
leadership evaluation
Evaluation is an act or instance of evaluating or appraising
To determine or set the value or amount of; to appraise
To determine the significance, worth or quality of; assess
Leadership –position or function of a leader – one who
guides, directs or able to lead
Leadership evaluation may simply be referred to as act of
determining the significance, worth or quality of one who is
leading or seeking to lead
4. Who Should We Evaluate?
Clearly the context of our discussion is about Church Leadership
But as Christians we all open to evaluation –either by ourselves or
be evaluated
Philippians 3:12-15 – Paul’s self evaluation
Acts 16:1-3 – Timothy being evaluated by Paul
Acts 6: 1-7 – Christians were evaluated and appointed to
serve the needy
Acts 14:23 – Christians were appointed to as Elders being
found fit to shepherd
It is required that Stewards or leaders be found faithful –I
Corinthians 4:1,2
The bible gives us insight on who are in the position of leadership
in the Church
Acts 14:23; 11:30; 15:2,4,6; 16:4; 20:17; 21:18; I Timothy 5:17;
Titus 1:5; James 5:14; II John 1; III John 1; I Timothy 3:1, 8,12;
Acts 20:28
5. What Should Leaders be

If we agree that the leaders in the Church should be
evaluated
What should they be evaluated of ?– The Bible provides the
outlines in a number of scriptures – key among them are:

one that no one can legitimately accuse of his
conduct

not cause the weak Christians to stumble -Rom 14:13-21
13. Why Should Leaders be
Evaluated?
In consideration of the qualifications
outlined in preceding slides, one can
deduce two primary importance for
evaluating Church leadership
1. To Pre-qualify ones fitness in the leadership
role before appointing to serve e.g.
Marks of moral qualities – high moral character
Marks of leadership – capacity to lead others in
Christian life and not for “BOY” (Boss Over You)
Marks of spiritual maturity –grown in Christ, life-
changing experience, not a novice
Marks of identification and confirmation -identify
exemplary qualities character to follow
14. Why Should Leaders be
Evaluated?
2. Feedback and Need for continuous
improvement – performance while in office:
Feedback is an important element/process in
leadership success – Philippians 3:12-15
To identify areas where improvements are
needed and not areas for “PHD” (Pull Him
Down) – I Timothy 1:5;
15. HOW Should We Evaluate?
Many a time we question why we evaluate much less the
process we deploy
Should we evaluate of our men before or after appointing
to serve as Church leaders?
If yes, how should we do it? (If no –Why not?)
Although we have concise guideline for benching ones
qualification to serve as a Church leader, The bible does
not expressly state how we should do it nor the what
process to use in evaluating men Christians for
leadership positions
However, Acts 6 gives us an outline / principle
Involvement of all the congregational members
Recognition of spiritually mature and growing men
16. HOW Should We Evaluate? -
Example
Carefully and prayerfully study 1 Tim 3: 8-13, after which,
you check each qualification to indicate that to the best of
your knowledge, the man you are choosing for consideration
(by name on this form) posses the qualities.
