World's Ist Holographic RFID Tag
FID and holograms are two
Rof the world's favorite
technologies used against
counterfeiting. It is a joy to see them
get together in one pretty little security
device, the result being the WORLD's
FIRST HOLOGRAPHIC—RFID
TAG, used by Hitachi and printing
experts at Toppan in Japan.
The hologram element is costly to fake
without large-scale facilities, while the
RFID data is encrypted and even more
difficult to crack.
On top of this, the stickers they are
rooted to, cannot be peeled off, without
being broken into pieces.
The ' IC Hologram' combines two
technologies with a view to make
tracking and verifying authenticity
of a product as watertight as
possible. Likely future application
include using it to secure batches of
medicines, but for now it is going
to keep tabs on really important
stuff like designer perfumes and
handbags.
According to sources nearly £100
billion are lost to counterfeiters every
year.

featured in prominent buildings in
NewYork City's financial district over
a four-week period.
Employing patented technology from
Dutch advertising company viZoo, the
2008 BMW X6 will be projected in
three dimensions, appearing as a
hologram, inside a ten-foot square,
BMW-branded enclosure. Inside the
light-controlled space, an animation
suggesting the vehicle's unique
combination of coupe agility and sports
activity vehicle versatility runs on a
loop. An interactive touch-screen
inside the enclosure will allow people
to manipulate the vehicle hologram
to view different angles, experience
the interior, explore the vehicle
features, and get a sense of the
generous cargo space.

High Security Registration Number
Plates (HSRNP)-touted as one of the best
anti-theft systems for vehicles. This plan
will set take in six months from now.
Starting November 2008, these number
plates are going to be mandatorily fixed
on all new vehicles. The new high
security number plates will nationwide,
sport a uniform font and a unique
hologram that cannot be counterfeited.
They will also be much more durable and
would not lose its attributes for five
years. These number plates are estimated
to cost about US $ 63 (Rs 2500) per
vehicle and cannot be easily removed
and replaced. With features like these,
they are not easy to tamper;
a) Embossed registration numbers as well
as chromium hologram on the
aluminium plates.
b) Unique laser numbering containing the
alphanumeric identification of testing
agencies and manufactures.
c) Rear registration numbers plates fitted
with non-reusable snap locks to make
them tamper proof.
d) A third chromium-based registration
plate in the form of sticker to be
attached to the windshield. It will
contain the number of the engine and
chassis, along with the name of the
registering authority. If tampered with,
it self-destructs.
e) In front and rear registration plates, the

Auto - Glaring Facts
The Counterfeit auto parts market is a $ 12 billion market world-wide

India:Asource of massive counterfeiting.
National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), established
by the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India
(ACMA), said counterfeit auto parts constitute over 37% of the total
market size of Indian auto-component parts.
The auto-component industry is roughly worth Rs 553 billion, which puts
the fake market between Rs 151-193 billion. The replacement market is
worth around Rs 135 billion. (Graph A: Market Size of Auto Component

According toACMAin 1997-98, fake automotive parts were responsible

The Holography Times Alert of the Issue
Auto Piracy - Problem Solution
hen it comes to intellectual
Wproperty theft and piracy,
most people think of movies
and high-end handbags- but what if the
brakes on your car were fake? Clearly,
the auto parts industry has a piracy
problem. The FBI estimates that the
auto industry loses $12 billion in annual
sales due to counterfeiting. China
accounts for $9 billion of counterfeit
auto parts loses.
What are fake parts?
Counterfeit Auto Parts is the selling of
unauthorized parts to be used in repair
and maintenance of an automobile.
Virtually every automotive part has
turned up in counterfeit trade, including
windshield glass, brake fluid, brakes,
headlights, taillights, emissions
components, tires, belts, hoses,
alternators, sheet metal and suspension
parts. The extent of it being that an
entire car was copied, manufactured
and sold not as a Chevy but as a “Chery
QQ,” with plans for export.
What's d i fferent now i s the
sophistication of the industrialisation
taking place in emerging economies-while
manufacturing in these areas has
developed, the concept of intellectual
property has not.
What are the damages
and risks?
Illegal trade in counterfeits
i s a t h r e a t t o t h e
competitiveness of the
automotive industry
Knock-off parts mean fewer
jobs for manufacturing companies
and loss in sales
With counterfeit auto parts, the concern
goes beyond monetary losses. Fake parts
are cheaper for a reason- they cut corners
and use poor quality materials, and the
consumer pays the price in the end.
The physical dangers and risks
involved in using these parts, is a
grave concern. It is frightening to
know, that authorities have found
brake linings made of compressed
grass, sawdust or cardboard that wear
out quickly; spark plugs that overheat
and can lead to fires; and gas caps that
can leak after rollover accidents.
What should be done?
While the trade of counterfeit parts has
dramatically increased, tackling
counterfeits is not impossible.
Counterfeiting is a problem that needs
to be addressed quickly and decisively.
Ideally, as a first move, more effective
partnerships should be built between
law enforcement agencies and the
private sector
with focus
on intelligence sharing, awareness and
product identification training.
However, the involvement of all
segments of the automotive and heavy-duty
industries cannot be undermined.
Manufacturers:
Manufacturers should create a team
that focuses on anti-counterfeiting
strategy. This should include
registration of trademarks and
copyrights, and strategy for
enforcement of intellectual property
rights.
Also, anticounterfeiting technology
should be employed, to ensure that
genuine products are readily
identifiable.
Use of various markings
and anti-theft devices (holograms,
RFID tags, etc.) is essential, that
would distinguish a genuine product
from a fake one
. Security features
designed for public recognition should
Once, counterfeit auto parts
were junk now, they are often
indistinguishable from the
real thing. And they
could be inside your car
It can be unnerving boarding a commercial airliner, knowing that the odds are good
that the aircraft has at least a few counterfeit parts in it. Airliners and helicopters have
crashed due to such spurious components. In one crash alone, 68 people died.
www.homai.org 09
10 www.homai.org Alert of the Issue The Holography Times be simple, memorable and eye-catching.
For eg. Hyundai Mobis, one of the
largest auto parts manufacturers in the
country, learned imitated parts are
being made and sold in the market. In
case of auto parts, the consequence of
forgery not only leads to loss of
income but also may lead to loss of life
if the consumer bought the imitated
item unknowingly. Hyundai Mobis
after a long contemplation discovered
about hologram and decided apply it
to protect its buyers from the
counterfeits. The company has been
using holograms on the inspection
certificates since 1993. Holograms for
HyundaiMobis, if forcefully removed
from the product, self-destructs and
points up the word ¡°MOBIS¡¯ on the
product, efficiently demonstrating its
level of security. Since the
introduction of hologram, Hyundai
Mobis was able to expose the
organization responsible for the
forgery and distribution of fake parts,
and even further, was able to earn even
higher customer reliance and
increased sales.
http://skhologram.co.kr/eng/cyberpr/c
yberpr03.php
Enker, a Bosnian manufacturer of
sparking plugs, employed De La Rue
Holography Company to produce a
sophisticated hologram, which is now
successfully authenticating its products.
Auto industry should work to educate
suppliers, distributors and employees
on how to detect counterfeit parts.
Distributors, retailers and technicians in
the aftermarket play a slightly different
role in the fight against counterfeiting.
While they may not be able to stop fake
products from being made, they should
prevent them from making it in to the
supply chain.
Customers should visually inspect
the product and learn to spot fakes If
the part looks different from the one
being replaced, it is a sure sign that it
is a counterfeit
In addition, the packaging should be
checked carefully for signals like odd
shaped pack, mismatched logos,
absence of anti-theft devices like
holograms. Anything out of the
ordinary should raise a red flag
Counterfeiting has surely exploded
in recent years to become a serious
threat. The automotive industry
needs to stand up and fight this
growing economic crime. This fake
auto-part trade is like cancer - a
problem that nobody can solve
quickly- It has to be an effort
sustained over many years.

The Holography Times Technology
HHolographic Conferencing
The Future of Tomorrow
olography is something
humans have imagined and
been fascinated with for
centuries. Today, Hologram and
Holography is a not a new word for
people. Holograms have been popping
up through science fictions, myths,
religions and even horror films. One of
these technologies that has reached new
heights, and is creating rising interest is
Hologram Conferencing.
Conceptually, a hologram or holograph
is a virtual image of a human that talks,
walks like a human but has no mass and
occupies no space. It can pass through
walls and it can appear at wish. This is
what Hologram Conferencing tries to
achieve- To make people appear as a
hologram (virtual person) in real time,
anywhere in the world.
The new technology behind the
hologram conferencing involves
capturing an image with a video camera
and loading it onto a PC encoding card.
The encoding card turns the image into
a digital format which, with the help of
some special software, is transmitted to
another computer over the internet. At
the receiving end, another computer
reverses the process and an image is
created.
Hologram Conferencing is recently
giving a chance to business executives
and leaders to make presentations in
distant countries through virtual
presence. Recent advances in cameras
and microphones enable business
leaders to see and hear the event from
around 500 miles away, as audiences
watch high-definition image on a
transparent screen.
With the current trend of businesses
looking to adopt a more flexible
approach to cut back on costs and
reduce carbon emission, many
observers see holographic technology
as the way forward. If one can view a
holographic image of the person one is
talking to, then there is no reason to fly
halfway across the world for a business
meeting. Also, alarmists see it as a good
thing for the environment.
The technology was earlier used by US
Vice-President Al Gore during his Live
Earth conference, Prince Charles and
MicrosoftGiant 'Bill Gates 'to avoid the
green house gas emission associated
with air travel.
We can envisage this technology being
used in many Industries - in data
visualization for planning, an awesome
asset in training/education and a must
see for the entertainment industry.
AI Gore’s Virtual Hologram
In the education space, a Maths teacher
was digitally teleported into the
exhibition centre at Olympia from
Graveney School in south London. At
the 2005 MTV Awards ceremony in
Portugal, the UK-based band Gorillaz
appeared in holographic form and
interacted with performers on-stage.
These technologies are all currently
available, but becoming more robust
and mass marketed. As quoted by an
Australian telecommunication
company Te l s t r a . “The new
technology will start entering
businesses in four to five years, and
eventually be in homes. As the
broadband speed start to go faster, a
step from there to a hologram is not
far away. ”

Rainbow Holography
Rainbow Holography
Steve was not only a superb scientist who led his field of decades, he was also a
wonderful practical craftsmen of the holographic image and a pied piper for
students, artists and designers who worked with advanced imaging. He was among
one of few legend and innovators in holography. Benton a gifted teacher, scientist,
engineer and artist who personified the best ofMIT.
Agreat enthusiast, he will always be remembered for his distinct accomplishments and
attributes. Benton invented rainbow holography a process that makes a hologram visible
using common white light, also know in credit card iteration as “Benton holograms”.
TheHolographyTimes third issue is a tribute toDr. StephenBenton the artist of rainbow holography.
Benton was born in San Francisco in 1941 and grew up in Santa Barbera, Calif. He received his
undergraduate degree in electrical engineering (1963) from MIT, and received his Masters (1964)
and doctorate degree (1968) from Harward University.
In his early days he worked for the Polaroid Corporation. In 1968, while working in Polaroid
Corporation he invented the rainbow hologram, a hologram visible to the naked eye that uses
common white light fused on film or glass. Benton's holograms were eventually embedded into
credit cards and driver's licenses to provide protection against counterfeiting.
Benton first became interested in optics at 11 when he wore a pair of 3-D glasses to view theVincent
Price movie, The House ofWax. In his own words he describes Holography as a true intersection
of art, science and technology. Holography workds like photography in that it records light wave
patterns on chemically sensitive film or glass.
The man who described holography as a true intersection of art, science and technology, held 14
patents in optical physics and photography. His work has been featured at the Museum of
Holography inNewYork, and used to create three-dimensionalCTandMRIimages.
Later in his career, Benton joinedMITin 1980 as a visiting scientist in the Laser Research Centre and
became founding head of the Spatial Imaging Group in 1982. From 1982 2003, for the past 20 years,
Benton taught media arts and sciences at MIT. He was also the director of the MIT Center for
AdvancedVisual Studies.
Benton a gifted teacher, a great scientist, engineer and artist, loved his work and remained active in
his field until the time of his death.

United States Patent Application 20070263268
November 15, 2007
A hologram recorder A1
Brief Abstract:
includes a light source (1) of a coherent light
beam and a spatial light modulator (5A) for
modulating a part of the light beam from the
light source (1) into a recording beam which
carries two-dimensional information. Another
part of the light beam is used as a reference
beam to interfere with the recording beam.
The recording beam and the reference beam are
directed to a hologram recording medium (B).
A semi-translucent optical device (4) is
disposed between the light source (1) and the
spatial light modulator (SA) for letting a part of
the beam travel to the spatial light modulator
(5A) as a transmitted beam while letting
another part of the beam travel to the hologram
recording medium (B) as a reflected beam.

  • 3. The Holography Times News Bytes World's Ist Holographic RFID Tag FID and holograms are two Rof the world's favorite technologies used against counterfeiting. It is a joy to see them get together in one pretty little security device, the result being the WORLD's FIRST HOLOGRAPHIC—RFID TAG, used by Hitachi and printing experts at Toppan in Japan. The hologram element is costly to fake without large-scale facilities, while the RFID data is encrypted and even more difficult to crack. On top of this, the stickers they are rooted to, cannot be peeled off, without being broken into pieces. The ' IC Hologram' combines two technologies with a view to make tracking and verifying authenticity of a product as watertight as possible. Likely future application include using it to secure batches of medicines, but for now it is going to keep tabs on really important stuff like designer perfumes and handbags. According to sources nearly £100 billion are lost to counterfeiters every year. • 9. The Holography Times Alert of the Issue Auto Piracy - Problem Solution hen it comes to intellectual Wproperty theft and piracy, most people think of movies and high-end handbags- but what if the brakes on your car were fake? Clearly, the auto parts industry has a piracy problem. The FBI estimates that the auto industry loses $12 billion in annual sales due to counterfeiting. China accounts for $9 billion of counterfeit auto parts loses. What are fake parts? Counterfeit Auto Parts is the selling of unauthorized parts to be used in repair and maintenance of an automobile. Virtually every automotive part has turned up in counterfeit trade, including windshield glass, brake fluid, brakes, headlights, taillights, emissions components, tires, belts, hoses, alternators, sheet metal and suspension parts. The extent of it being that an entire car was copied, manufactured and sold not as a Chevy but as a “Chery QQ,” with plans for export. What's d i fferent now i s the sophistication of the industrialisation taking place in emerging economies-while manufacturing in these areas has developed, the concept of intellectual property has not. What are the damages and risks? Illegal trade in counterfeits i s a t h r e a t t o t h e competitiveness of the automotive industry Knock-off parts mean fewer jobs for manufacturing companies and loss in sales With counterfeit auto parts, the concern goes beyond monetary losses. Fake parts are cheaper for a reason- they cut corners and use poor quality materials, and the consumer pays the price in the end. The physical dangers and risks involved in using these parts, is a grave concern. It is frightening to know, that authorities have found brake linings made of compressed grass, sawdust or cardboard that wear out quickly; spark plugs that overheat and can lead to fires; and gas caps that can leak after rollover accidents. What should be done? While the trade of counterfeit parts has dramatically increased, tackling counterfeits is not impossible. Counterfeiting is a problem that needs to be addressed quickly and decisively. Ideally, as a first move, more effective partnerships should be built between law enforcement agencies and the private sector with focus on intelligence sharing, awareness and product identification training. However, the involvement of all segments of the automotive and heavy-duty industries cannot be undermined. Manufacturers: Manufacturers should create a team that focuses on anti-counterfeiting strategy. This should include registration of trademarks and copyrights, and strategy for enforcement of intellectual property rights. Also, anticounterfeiting technology should be employed, to ensure that genuine products are readily identifiable. Use of various markings and anti-theft devices (holograms, RFID tags, etc.) is essential, that would distinguish a genuine product from a fake one . Security features designed for public recognition should Once, counterfeit auto parts were junk now, they are often indistinguishable from the real thing. And they could be inside your car It can be unnerving boarding a commercial airliner, knowing that the odds are good that the aircraft has at least a few counterfeit parts in it. Airliners and helicopters have crashed due to such spurious components. In one crash alone, 68 people died. www.homai.org 09
  • 10. 10 www.homai.org Alert of the Issue The Holography Times be simple, memorable and eye-catching. For eg. Hyundai Mobis, one of the largest auto parts manufacturers in the country, learned imitated parts are being made and sold in the market. In case of auto parts, the consequence of forgery not only leads to loss of income but also may lead to loss of life if the consumer bought the imitated item unknowingly. Hyundai Mobis after a long contemplation discovered about hologram and decided apply it to protect its buyers from the counterfeits. The company has been using holograms on the inspection certificates since 1993. Holograms for HyundaiMobis, if forcefully removed from the product, self-destructs and points up the word ¡°MOBIS¡¯ on the product, efficiently demonstrating its level of security. Since the introduction of hologram, Hyundai Mobis was able to expose the organization responsible for the forgery and distribution of fake parts, and even further, was able to earn even higher customer reliance and increased sales. http://skhologram.co.kr/eng/cyberpr/c yberpr03.php Enker, a Bosnian manufacturer of sparking plugs, employed De La Rue Holography Company to produce a sophisticated hologram, which is now successfully authenticating its products. Auto industry should work to educate suppliers, distributors and employees on how to detect counterfeit parts. Distributors, retailers and technicians in the aftermarket play a slightly different role in the fight against counterfeiting. While they may not be able to stop fake products from being made, they should prevent them from making it in to the supply chain. Customers should visually inspect the product and learn to spot fakes If the part looks different from the one being replaced, it is a sure sign that it is a counterfeit In addition, the packaging should be checked carefully for signals like odd shaped pack, mismatched logos, absence of anti-theft devices like holograms. Anything out of the ordinary should raise a red flag Counterfeiting has surely exploded in recent years to become a serious threat. The automotive industry needs to stand up and fight this growing economic crime. This fake auto-part trade is like cancer - a problem that nobody can solve quickly- It has to be an effort sustained over many years. Distributors, retailers and technicians Customers
  • 11. The Holography Times Technology HHolographic Conferencing The Future of Tomorrow olography is something humans have imagined and been fascinated with for centuries. Today, Hologram and Holography is a not a new word for people. Holograms have been popping up through science fictions, myths, religions and even horror films. One of these technologies that has reached new heights, and is creating rising interest is Hologram Conferencing. Conceptually, a hologram or holograph is a virtual image of a human that talks, walks like a human but has no mass and occupies no space. It can pass through walls and it can appear at wish. This is what Hologram Conferencing tries to achieve- To make people appear as a hologram (virtual person) in real time, anywhere in the world. The new technology behind the hologram conferencing involves capturing an image with a video camera and loading it onto a PC encoding card. The encoding card turns the image into a digital format which, with the help of some special software, is transmitted to another computer over the internet. At the receiving end, another computer reverses the process and an image is created. Hologram Conferencing is recently giving a chance to business executives and leaders to make presentations in distant countries through virtual presence. Recent advances in cameras and microphones enable business leaders to see and hear the event from around 500 miles away, as audiences watch high-definition image on a transparent screen. With the current trend of businesses looking to adopt a more flexible approach to cut back on costs and reduce carbon emission, many observers see holographic technology as the way forward. If one can view a holographic image of the person one is talking to, then there is no reason to fly halfway across the world for a business meeting. Also, alarmists see it as a good thing for the environment. The technology was earlier used by US Vice-President Al Gore during his Live Earth conference, Prince Charles and MicrosoftGiant 'Bill Gates 'to avoid the green house gas emission associated with air travel. We can envisage this technology being used in many Industries - in data visualization for planning, an awesome asset in training/education and a must see for the entertainment industry. AI Gore’s Virtual Hologram In the education space, a Maths teacher was digitally teleported into the exhibition centre at Olympia from Graveney School in south London. At the 2005 MTV Awards ceremony in Portugal, the UK-based band Gorillaz appeared in holographic form and interacted with performers on-stage. These technologies are all currently available, but becoming more robust and mass marketed. As quoted by an Australian telecommunication company Te l s t r a . “The new technology will start entering businesses in four to five years, and eventually be in homes. As the broadband speed start to go faster, a step from there to a hologram is not far away. ” www.homai.org 11

He was among one of few legend and innovators in holography. Benton a gifted teacher, scientist, engineer and artist who personified the best ofMIT. Agreat enthusiast, he will always be remembered for his distinct accomplishments and attributes. Benton invented rainbow holography a process that makes a hologram visible using common white light, also know in credit card iteration as “Benton holograms”. TheHolographyTimes third issue is a tribute toDr. StephenBenton the artist of rainbow holography. Benton was born in San Francisco in 1941 and grew up in Santa Barbera, Calif. He received his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering (1963) from MIT, and received his Masters (1964) and doctorate degree (1968) from Harward University. In his early days he worked for the Polaroid Corporation. In 1968, while working in Polaroid Corporation he invented the rainbow hologram, a hologram visible to the naked eye that uses common white light fused on film or glass. Benton's holograms were eventually embedded into credit cards and driver's licenses to provide protection against counterfeiting. Benton first became interested in optics at 11 when he wore a pair of 3-D glasses to view theVincent Price movie, The House ofWax. In his own words he describes Holography as a true intersection of art, science and technology. Holography workds like photography in that it records light wave patterns on chemically sensitive film or glass. The man who described holography as a true intersection of art, science and technology, held 14 patents in optical physics and photography. His work has been featured at the Museum of Holography inNewYork, and used to create three-dimensionalCTandMRIimages. Later in his career, Benton joinedMITin 1980 as a visiting scientist in the Laser Research Centre and became founding head of the Spatial Imaging Group in 1982. From 1982 2003, for the past 20 years, Benton taught media arts and sciences at MIT. He was also the director of the MIT Center for AdvancedVisual Studies.
