GETTING THE MOST FROM STRUCTURED DATA
22. PRODUCT DATA TEMPLATES
WHAT ARE PRODUCT DATA TEMPLATES?
A product data template is simply a form that contains
standardised headings against which manufacturers
product information is placed. There is a different template
for each type of product.
>5700 TEMPLATES
26. “Manufacturers who supply digital information to the industry are encouraged to
make their information freely available in the form of a product data sheet which
as a minimum should respond to the NBS “data required” template and/or (where
appropriate) parametric 3D BIM objects aligned to this template.
Manufacturers and product data templates are not limited by the “data required
templates” in the BIM Toolkit and manufacturers can add further information to
identify their key selling points eg to support analysis etc.”

39. • NBS recognised the lack of structure
and data consistency across all BIM
objects. As more and more assets are
being built with BIM the introduction
of this standard will revolutionise the
way in which we interact with the
information.
• To achieve consistency NBS has
produced a global standard for BIM
objects with a recognisable set of
criteria, to which all BIM objects can be
created.
NBS BIM OBJECT STANDARD
40. • This means you can select and use BIM objects
with confidence, knowing that you are working
with objects that are in the right format, contain
all the information you need and are compatible
with all platforms that you work across.
• Whether objects are authored by NBS or another
provider, by using this standard it ensures
consistency not only for you and the people you
work alongside but across the entire construction
industry.
• NBS National BIM Library objects work directly
with various BIM design tools and can be
seamlessly integrated into NBS Create software,
no other BIM object library can offer you this.
NBS BIM OBJECT STANDARD
41. “NBS BIM Object Standard is a game
changing initiative within the industry. It
is absolutely essential that we have
national standards that we can also
push internationally.”
“Giving us a consistent
structure for all the
information coming from
the project, it can only be
good for the construction
industry.”
“The industry looks for a standard, there is
nothing better than the accredited body of
RIBA and NBS to set that standard.”
NBS BIM OBJECT STANDARD
42. • NBS BIM Object Standard

RIBA is a registered charity., And RIBAE’s profit is gift aided to the RIBA to support architecture and the built environment.
We have main offices in Newcastle and London
And have been serving the construction industry for over 45 years.
We are a knowledge business.
We connect people to information, so that they have the knowledge they need to make the right project decisions.
We employ over 250 staff
NBS serves >20,000 customers
Practices 5000.
97 out of the top 100 architects use NBS.
RIBA Enterprises business operates across two very well respected brands.
RIBA is a business superbrand – independently selected brand shortlist by the centre for brand analysis
….brands that represent quality, reliability and distinction.
We cover many aspects of construction information from product data, to specifications, standards and publications such as the approved documents.
over 12,000 manufacturers are listed in our directories
and 1,000 plus manufacturers take specialist product such as NBS Plus – which is a tool to embed your product details into specifications and National BIM Library.

Walmart is bigger than amazon in terms of US sales, but Amazon dominates online sales with 22% against Walmarts 6%.
Work with an organisation that can give you reach across all stages.
You can download product data templates from the BIM Toolkit site
Once you’ve downloaded your product data template it should be completed with your product information to create a product data sheet.
A product data sheet is simply the name given to the template once it has been completed with your specific product information.
To complete the template, list your products one by one and add your product information to the spreadsheet.
f you get stuck, just get in touch via info@thenbs.com, we’re here to help.
WHAT’S THE FUTURE FOR PRODUCT DATA TEMPLATES?
The product data templates available on the NBS BIM Toolkit represent the minimum product information that is needed for Level 2 BIM projects. These templates will be maintained and developed to include feedback from industry and align with the work of BIM4M2 and CIBSE. The templates will evolve to support the needs of our digital construction industry and to ensure they continue to align with the requirements of relevant European and international standards as well as mapping to open data exchange standards, such as COBie and IFC.
Of course it’s not all just about product data sheets
Product data templates enable the preparation of data that represents the minimum information required for level 2 BIM projects, but information in this form is not as useful to designers and specifiers as BIM objects, or structured product specifications such as NBS Plus.
Here’s how NBS handles BIM and specification.
NBS contains thousands of product specifications.
These are completed by designers to create project specifications.
NBS Plus places manufacturer product specifications within the NBS software.
This gives the specifier the choice of selecting a manufacturer product to replace the generic specification.
In combination with National BIM Library this guards against substitution.
At the click of a button the generic specification is replaced by the manufacturers product specification.
Library of objects all adhering to a common standard. This provides a library that is trusted and used by thousands od designers every day.
It’s a place where you can place your BIM content and make it work hard for you.
BIM objects are quite simply a digital replica of your real life product. These objects are placed into the project design by the architect.
If you have BIM objects for your products then architects will use them.
Hundreds of thousands of objects have been downloaded already.
We’ve got the largest linkedin active BIM community. These people are passionate about BIM.
We holds key positions in groups such as British Standards committees, International BIM organisations such as buildingSMART.
All downloads are tracked and we share details about that with you. Which orgs have used which products etc. So its not just about publication, it’s not about catalogues its about pre-sales.
Detailed usage analysis helps you win business.
It’s a means of getting your products in front of your customers in a digital environment.
It’s a means of getting your products specified, getting your products built.
We are the only library where all manufacturer objects comply with the latest version of the NBS BIM Object Standard.
This standard is very important…….it is essentially the means by which the benefits of BIM can be realised.
The availability of manufacturers’ BIM objects is an important factor in achieving success with BIM.
Objects need to be of the right quality, and connect with generic objects and associated technical specifications to support the digital plan of work – the construction professional’s workflow. Achieving standardisation between generic and proprietary information is what NBS has been doing for over 40 years, and its entire product range is geared towards supporting the digital plan of work.
Lots of organisations are using this standard – it ensures that objects work together when placed together into a virtual building.
We reviewed what was available already – there’s lots out there covering varying aspects and we wanted where possible to support the standards already in place and we also wanted to focus on creating a standard that was achievable and something that very much reflects the requirements of level 2 BIM
with support for open standards
and multiple platforms
So after lots of head scratching and deliberation we published the NBS BIM Object Standard last September.
It has been download by those outside of NBS thousands and thousands of times.
So the benefits of any standard and in this case the NBS BIM Object Standard can be seen in the ease of use of the objects in the bim environment.
Assurance - This standard fills a gap and sets a quality standard which will help clients procure buildings. Project Managers and Clients using the NBS BIM Object Standard can benefit as you can be confident that the quality of BIM objects within your project models is suitable and to a known standard.
Efficiency - Designers are creating objects themselves as there are not enough manufacturers objects in the market place. Using the standard will bring efficiency to your processes and lead to better designers and better buildings. Designers creating their own objects for practice and project-specific purposes can now do so to a common standard enabling greater collaboration, efficiency and more meaningful information exchange.
Quality - Manufacturers you really have a job to do. You have the challenge of creating objects and making them available at the right time in the right place all by 2016. This standard gives manufacturers wanting to create objects themselves a clear benchmark. It’s something that provides knowledge and enables manufacturers to attain and comply.
Compatibility – Just like we have with batteries, nuts and bolts, usb connectors, plug sockets, and in the not too distant future mobile phone chargers, standardisation brings compatibility. BIM objects need to work with each other
A feature we have been playing with is product comparison
This might appear in one or more of our product information services, would this be uesful?
