- Once you’ve downloaded your product data template it should be completed with your product information to create a product data sheet. A product data sheet is simply the name given to the template once it has been completed with your specific product information. WHAT’S THE FUTURE FOR PRODUCT DATA TEMPLATES? The product data templates available on the NBS BIM Toolkit represent the minimum product information that is needed for Level 2 BIM projects. These templates will be maintained and developed to include feedback from industry and align with the work of BIM4M2 and CIBSE. The templates will evolve to support the needs of our digital construction industry and to ensure they continue to align with the requirements of relevant European and international standards as well as mapping to open data exchange standards, such as COBie and IFC.
- Of course it’s not all just about product data sheets Product data templates enable the preparation of data that represents the minimum information required for level 2 BIM projects, but information in this form is not as useful to designers and specifiers as BIM objects, or structured product specifications such as NBS Plus. Here’s how NBS handles BIM and specification.
- NBS contains thousands of product specifications. These are completed by designers to create project specifications. NBS Plus places manufacturer product specifications within the NBS software. This gives the specifier the choice of selecting a manufacturer product to replace the generic specification. In combination with National BIM Library this guards against substitution.
- At the click of a button the generic specification is replaced by the manufacturers product specification.
- Library of objects all adhering to a common standard. This provides a library that is trusted and used by thousands od designers every day. It’s a place where you can place your BIM content and make it work hard for you. BIM objects are quite simply a digital replica of your real life product. These objects are placed into the project design by the architect. If you have BIM objects for your products then architects will use them.

- We are the only library where all manufacturer objects comply with the latest version of the NBS BIM Object Standard. This standard is very important…….it is essentially the means by which the benefits of BIM can be realised. The availability of manufacturers’ BIM objects is an important factor in achieving success with BIM. Objects need to be of the right quality, and connect with generic objects and associated technical specifications to support the digital plan of work – the construction professional’s workflow. Achieving standardisation between generic and proprietary information is what NBS has been doing for over 40 years, and its entire product range is geared towards supporting the digital plan of work. Assurance - This standard fills a gap and sets a quality standard which will help clients procure buildings. Project Managers and Clients using the NBS BIM Object Standard can benefit as you can be confident that the quality of BIM objects within your project models is suitable and to a known standard. Efficiency - Designers are creating objects themselves as there are not enough manufacturers objects in the market place. Using the standard will bring efficiency to your processes and lead to better designers and better buildings. Designers creating their own objects for practice and project-specific purposes can now do so to a common standard enabling greater collaboration, efficiency and more meaningful information exchange. Quality - Manufacturers you really have a job to do. You have the challenge of creating objects and making them available at the right time in the right place all by 2016. This standard gives manufacturers wanting to create objects themselves a clear benchmark. It’s something that provides knowledge and enables manufacturers to attain and comply. Compatibility – Just like we have with batteries, nuts and bolts, usb connectors, plug sockets, and in the not too distant future mobile phone chargers, standardisation brings compatibility.
