• Definition: the naming of a thing or action by
a vocal imitation of the sound associated with
it (as buzz, crash)
3. Examples of Onomatopoeia
• Cock-a-doodle-do, crowed the rooster.
• The clock goes tick-tock.
• With the click of a mouse, I can open a new
window.
• I heard the bees buzzing.
• Don’t beep that horn again!
• Drip, drip, drip went the faucet all day long.
4. What examples can you think of?
• Turn to your shoulder partner and think
of as many sound words for the following:
– Animals (moo, chirp, etc.)
– Food (crunch, sizzle, etc.)
– Two things crashing together (bang,
pow, etc.)
