This talk is aimed at primary school children, and is designed to be delivered as a school assembly (taking 30-40 minutes). The embedded videos have not been included, but URLs are given. The 'Improve' word is usually accompanied by a display of old mobile phones to show how things have improved for a technology all the children will know.

So here’s a slightly bigger example. Some of you may recognize the picture on the left as Leonardo da Vinci’s sketch of a helicopter. The invention that he sketched was really clever, but he didn’t actually build it. He didn’t have the materials or technology to actually make it work. The first full scale production helicopter was built by Igor Sikorsky in 1942 – and here’s a wonderful clip of video showing him making a very early flight, wearing his Trilby hat for safety. So Igor Sikorsky shows us how engineers do – they don’t just dream and plan, they make real things work.
