Meet Vivaldi. This presentation will take you through the history of its creation, the concept of its design and the principles of its functioning and usage.
Vivaldi is a network of electronic libraries which enables online users to work with educational and scientific materials of various organizations, including libraries, universities and publishing houses.
Vivaldi is a unified interface which allows several thousands of users to access the network simultaneously, either online from their local network or in the form of ebooks stores at various organizations, libraries and publishing houses.
Rights holders can publish their ebooks in Vivaldi and fully control access rights, creating both free and paid access packages.
Access to materials is obtained through a vast network of virtual reading rooms located in major universities and libraries. Vivaldi has an in-built system of orders allowing collection holders to receive royalties when their texts are printed out at virtual reading rooms.
Vivaldi also has an in-built feature protecting books from unauthorised copying, and the access statistics for a right holder’s documents can be viewed online. All of this enables digital libraries to offer access to their books while observing copyright laws.
The selection of educational and scientific literature available on the site is steadily growing thanks to the addition of new libraries by various organizations participating in the project and also because new libraries, universities and publishing houses are signing up to the service. All of this contributes to the development and distribution of the cultural and scientific legacy among the region’s reading population.
Vivaldi supports full-text customizable searches through whole documents and entire document directories.
Vivaldi came to replace DefView. After implementing some changes to DefView we realised the necessity of creating an completely new service. It became clear that a network of electronic libraries should be built on a new set of principles; it should be able to be easily integrated with other software and satisfy the needs of modern readers. Vivaldi is therefore the result of experience accumulated by the developer over time, taking into account all the defects and imperfections of its predecessor.
The developer of both systems conducted a systematic and smooth transition from DefView to Vivaldi.
Beta testing of Vivaldi began on 1 November 2010, and on 1 January 2011 the newer system was put into commercial operation.
This slide shows a diagram depicting the pace of Vivaldi distribution. In the first half year of its existence more copies of Vivaldi were sold, implemented and tested than copies of DefView were in three years. Purchases of DefView are shown in blue on the diagram. During the same period numerous contracts were signed for the purchase and use of Vivaldi (shown in red). Furthermore, a testing platform was opened for clients interested in adopting the network. These potential buyers are shown in green.
It is worth stressing again that the data relating to Vivaldi accounts only for the first half year of its existence, and that for DefView we are taking about a 3 year period.
Vivaldi works in the following way:
When an organization (a library, university or publishing house) wants to deliver its content to a certain audience, a document server, which communicates directly with the documents and converts them to the necessary format, is installed on site at the organization’s venue.
The key element of the system architecture is Vivaldi’s central server, located at http://www.vivaldi.ru. The central server acts as the single search engine for all the document servers installed at various organizations.
It is the document servers which are sold and installed. A large number of installations can be made in a short period of time due to the modular nature of Vivaldi’s structure.
Users can log in to Vivaldi using various popular social networks and services as well as via accounts within registered organizations.
Vivaldi supports integration with various user databases (Active Directory, for example), permitting users possessing an account at those organizations to log in to Vivaldi with these registration details through the Vivaldi Login Server function.
Due to the modular structure of Vivaldi each new installation of document servers doesn’t interfere with the network as a whole or require network retesting. It is this fact that allows Vivaldi to carry out a large number of installations over a short time. Each module performs certain functions: basic modules support the main functionality of Vivaldi and peripheral modules support integration and synchronisation with search engines, the directory, the installation system for user accounts and more. The network allows for the configuration of separate modules with the other modules left intact. Such a structure allows Vivaldi to easily integrate with the particular setup of an organisation where the document server is installed. This is the principal distinction of Vivaldi from its predecessor, DefView.
Vivaldi’s client application is available for Windows, Linux, MacOS, Android, iPhone and iPad.
At present a number of institutions shown on the slide are successfully operating Vivaldi. We are continually negotiating and winning contracts for new connections.
