  2. 2. Objective : to better understand the motivations underlying private car transport so that the school may develop a package of targeted measures to improve the traffic situation around CIS. Which Mode of Transport? 535 responses received representing 52% of CIS families * Many of these respondents used public transport Jackson reports 660 2-way bus riders or 46% of student body
  3. 3. Survey responses reflect actual bus usage patterns. * Excludes 55 respondents (10%) selecting “other.”

Private Car Both Ways : Improved bus flexibility may have a modest impact in private car usage but most families with drivers are unlikely to respond to incentives to ride the bus. <ul><li>Use of the private car meets multiple needs for most respondents </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Of those wanting flexibility: 52% had drivers and 40% wanted to spend time in the car with their kids </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Of those saying the trip took too long: 48% had drivers and 39% wanted to spend time in the car with their kids. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>“ Other” comments were focused on issues related to route and multiple riders (36 comments) </li></ul><ul><li>Bus service not available (9) or bus full (2) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Pick up too early (5) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Multiple children so car more economical (4), or already car pool (4) </li></ul></ul>N = 116 (respondents may select more than one choice)
  6. 6. Private Car Both Ways : 75% are willing to consider a regular car pool with other CIS families in their area but matching schedules is a big obstacle. N = 115 (only private car both ways respondents)

Private Car Both Ways : half of these respondents (54) made comments/suggestions for reducing private car usage <ul><li>Car Pooling (12) </li></ul><ul><li>“ car pooling or make all private cars drop off at the tsoi sai wo junction” </li></ul><ul><li>“ Allow use if 2+ more children are &quot;carpooling&quot;. Bus TO school : The need for flexibility to go to different locations after school for activities or play dates is the primary reason for only using the bus going TO school. <ul><li>Represent 7% of survey respondents (9% of actual riders) </li></ul><ul><li>Trip length was not an isolated issue – 63% also needed flexibility </li></ul><ul><li>Convenience/availability of after-school-activities (ASA) transport is an issue </li></ul><ul><li>74% of these respondents use private car to get home; 31% use the public bus </li></ul>N = 35 (respondents may select more than one choice)

Bus From school : Dropping the kids off on the way to work or issues with timing/duration of trip to school were primary reasons for not taking the bus to school. <ul><li>Represents 6% of survey respondents (11% of actual student riders) </li></ul><ul><li>100% of these respondents use private car to get to school </li></ul><ul><li>“ Other” reasons were varied – no clear themes </li></ul>N = 15 (respondents may select more than one choice)

Key themes for improving traffic included car pooling, shuttles to disburse traffic and/or restrictions to reduce traffic <ul><li>Car pooling and priority access </li></ul><ul><ul><li>School to facilitate the matching of cars and riders </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Priority stickers for car-pool cars </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Shuttle service to drop-off points for private car pick-up </li></ul><ul><li>Restrictions on private cars </li></ul><ul><ul><li>No stopping/waiting near school </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Car Drop-off points near mini bus or “walking bus” </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Restricted times of access – bus priority </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Mandatory bus use for students near school </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Mandate use of bus TO school – but with shorter trip times </li></ul><ul><li>Financial incentives to use bus or disincentives for cars </li></ul>
