CIS Survey of Traffic Choices Analysis and Recommendations Prepared by Madelaine Steller Chiang December 2010
Objective : to better understand the motivations underlying private car transport so that the school may develop a package of targeted measures to improve the traffic situation around CIS. Which Mode of Transport? 535 responses received representing 52% of CIS families * Many of these respondents used public transport Jackson reports 660 2-way bus riders or 46% of student body
Survey responses reflect actual bus usage patterns.  * Excludes 55 respondents (10%) selecting  “other.”
Nearly half of the student population do not use the bus service Estimated Private Car Contribution to School Traffic  1 ( Non-bus and OW Bus-Riders ) 1  Contribution to road traffic attributable to the 52% of the student body who do not use the bus both ways 2  10% of respondents sited  “other” as their transport choice. Private Car Both Ways :  Improved bus flexibility may have a modest impact in private car usage but most families with drivers are unlikely to respond to incentives to ride the bus. ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],N = 116 (respondents may select more than one choice)
Private Car Both Ways : 75% are willing to consider a regular car pool with other CIS families in their area but matching schedules is a big obstacle.  N = 115 (only private car both ways respondents)
Private Car Both Ways :  half of these respondents (54) made comments/suggestions for reducing private car usage ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Bus TO school :  The need for flexibility to go to different locations after school for activities or play dates is the primary reason for only using the bus going TO school. ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],N = 35 (respondents may select more than one choice)
Bus From school :  Dropping the kids off on the way to work or issues with timing/duration of trip to school were primary reasons for not taking the bus to school. ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],N = 15 (respondents may select more than one choice)
Bus riders : gave above average ratings across all aspects of Jackson Bus services. Very  Poor  Average  Good  Excellent Good N = 347, N/A responses omitted
All Respondents :  Over 200 comments were received.  Key themes for improving traffic included car pooling, shuttles to disburse traffic and/or restrictions to reduce traffic ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
All Respondents :  suggestions for enhancing the attractiveness of the bus service focused on flexibility and shorter routes; ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
