This document summarizes and compares two studies: a comparative study and a non-comparative study. The comparative study compared the effects of multimedia instruction versus lectures for Chinese learning among 41 students in Taiwan. It found no significant differences but that multimedia instruction led to slightly better performance. The non-comparative study examined factors influencing achievement in web-based courses among 99 students in the US. Unexpectedly, it found that learning styles and characteristics did not affect web-based learning achievement. Both studies had limitations such as small sample sizes and relying on self-reported data.

Mohammad Ahmadi, University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Parthasarati Dileepan, University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Kathleen Wheatley, University of Tennessee-Chattanooga ABSTRACT In recent years, online teaching has become extremely popular. Most institutions of higher learning are offering online courses in almost every field of study. Teaching any course online is challenging, but teaching quantitative courses, such as operations management, management science, statistics, and others, have added a more challenging dimension to online teaching. Publishers have been assisting professors of quantitative methods courses by developing various teaching and evaluation tools. This study explores one such publisher’s tool, Quiz Me Mastery Points, of Pearson’s MyOmLab. The performance of students on their examinations and the Mastery Points they earned through the Quiz Me feature were compared, and it was determined that there was a significant correlation between the two. Keywords: Online teaching, Quantitative courses, Quiz Me Mastery Points, MyOmLab INTRODUCTION In the last decade online teaching and learning has become the norm in many institutions of higher learning. Numerous institutions are offering online courses both nationally and internationally. The Online Consortium tracks online education in the Unites States and releases an annual report entitled The Online Report Card. The most recently released report (Allen & Seaman, 2016) showed there were more than 5.8 million students in the United States enrolled in one or more online courses in the fall of 2014. This constitutes 28.4% of all student enrollment. The report further stated that many academic leaders (63.31% in 2015) strongly believe online learning is a critical component of their long-term strategy. It also stated that 77.14% of the chief academic officers in 2015 rated the learning outcome of online education as good as or better than face-to-face. However, an alarming finding was that only 29.1% of the chief academic officers believed their faculty accepted the value and legitimacy of online education. These findings, along with historic trends, reveal a mismatch between the growth in student demand for online course offerings and the hesitancy of faculty to buy into the efficacy of online teaching. Reconciling this mismatch is critical to realizing the full potential of the online classes that the students are increasingly expecting. Data were collected from students in an online MBA program (Kim, Liu, & Bonk, 2005) through semistructured, one-on-one interviews, surveys, and in-person focus group interviews. This paper reports the findings of a Stage I meta-analysis exploring the effectiveness of online digital literacy practices performed through social media tools in higher education classrooms as measured by learning outcomes. An extensive literature search culled more than 500 potential articles and resulted in a sample of 51 representative quasi-experimental studies, consisting of 4,630 total participants. Fifty-one effect sizes were extracted and yielded a moderately positive statistically significant weighted average effect size of g+ = 0.315, k=51, p <. 01. This overall effect size suggests that integrating online digital literacy practices into the higher education classroom benefits students on measures of academic achievement and offers significant learning support. In addition, several moderator variables were tested to determine what factors and literacy practices impact learning outcomes; namely, field of study (STEM, ARTS), conceptualization of tool (social learning theory, delivery tool), peer interaction (yes, no), modality (blogs, collaborative communication text-based technologies, i.e. forums and wikis; podcasts, and virtual worlds), practice (consuming, prosuming behaviors), and the learning outcome measured (course project, knowledge-based exam); moderator effect sizes were statistically significant for the following variables: conceptualization of the tool, practice, and learning outcomes.

6 Standardized Testing Standardized tests can be defined as any form of test that is administered and “scored in a standard and consistent manner”, that makes it possible to compare the performance of individual and group of students. Standardized testing was first used in China to select candidates for the province bureaucracy. The UK adopted this form of testing in the early 19th century, and it spread from the UK to Europe and then America. Its spread was fueled by the industrial revolution. Standardized testing involves different types of testing. Some of the most common are “aptitude tests”, “achievement tests”, “college-admission tests”, “international comparison tests”, and “psychological tests”. Achievement test is a type of tests that is intended to assess the knowledge and skills that students have learned in school and determine their academic progress. They can also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the instructors and the schools. (Education Glossary, 2015). There have been debates about standardized testing. Some are against the system while others are for the system. Standardized testing is responsible for narrowing of the education standard and curriculum. It reduces the growth of the students and does not focus on the social sciences, arts and talents of the students and thus it is a major killer of the student’s educational growth in terms of arts and social sciences. This does not help the student develop as an individual as much effort is put into passing the tests rather than build character of an individual. In this paper, we will look into the advantages and disadvantages of standardized tests. Pro and Cons of Standardized Tests The debate on the standardized tests ranges on several key issues. Some of these issues of contention are: firstly, the numerical scores on a standardized testing accurate, objective and useful evidence of performance? Secondly, are the standardized tests fair to all students? The other one is the use of standardized tests providing valuable information to improve instructional quality? Then do the advantages of standardized testing outweigh the costs or time spent in taking the tests? Lastly, do standardized tests focus too narrowly on few academic subjects? The benefit of the standardized tests is that the tests are reliable and objective measures of student achievement. Policymakers use the test to determine whether the laws and policies are working or not and to compare educational performance within the state. Multiple-choice tests are graded by machine, and thus, they are not subject to bias or subjectivity. Also, standardized tests are inclusive because their content is equal for all students. Using alternate tests for the minorities would be unfair and alienating them, according to former Washington DC, schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee. Thus, the use of standardized tests to assess the students is an equal measure of all students (ProCon.org, 2015). More importantly, .
