1. The USAID Mission in Bangladesh is one of the largest USAID development assistance
programs in the world. USAID has been a development partner in Bangladesh since the
country’s independence in 1971. The U.S. Government, through USAID, has provided over
$6 billion in development assistance to Bangladesh since 1971. In 2012 alone, USAID
provided more than $200 million to improve the lives of people in Bangladesh. USAID
supports programs in Bangladesh that: promote democratic institutions and practices, expand
food security and economic opportunity, improve health and education services, and increase
resiliency to climate change through adaptation and low carbon development.
Over the next five years, USAID will support the Government of Bangladesh’s plans to
transform its economy to achieve Bangladesh’s ambitious vision of becoming a middle
income country by 2021 when Bangladesh celebrates its 50th year of independence. In 2011,
USAID/Bangladesh developed a five year country development cooperation strategy based
on GOB’s national plans, including the Sixth Five?Year Plan for 2011–2015. The goal of
USAID/Bangladesh’s strategy is for Bangladesh to become a knowledge-based, healthy, food
secure and climate resilient middle-income democracy.
Under the USAID/Bangladesh strategy, one of the core objectives is to improve health status
through increased use of integrated and effective family planning and reproductive health
services and strengthened health systems and governance.
USAID implements a broad range of health service delivery and health systems strengthening
projects as part of the Global Health Initiative, the U.S. Government’s portfolio of health
programs and investments. USAID helps the GOB to adopt and scale up proven interventions

2. that increase access to voluntary family planning, reduce maternal and child mortality and
improve nutritional status. Our projects also work to reduce the burden of tuberculosis, avian
influenza, and other infectious diseases and keep HIV/AIDS prevalence below one percent.
USAID funds NGOs and government programs to improve and expand health care services
for the poorest communities. Home and community-based programs provide prenatal and
postnatal care and safe birth delivery by trained birth attendants for mothers. USAID support
ensures the availability of contraceptives through a nationwide social marketing program that
includes more than 200,000 sales outlets. In education, USAID supports improved pre-
school and basic education programs in over 2,400 schools and a Bangladesh version of the
Sesame Street television program, reaching nine million viewers weekly. The FY 2012
budget for these programs is $103.5 million, including $25.9 million in FFP resources.
USAID is the lead U.S. Government agency that works to end extreme global poverty
and enable resilient, democratic societies to realize their potential.
Assistance to Foreign Countries
U.S. foreign assistance has always had the twofold purpose of furthering America's interests
while improving lives in the developing world. USAID carries out U.S. foreign policy by
promoting broad-scale human progress at the same time it expands stable, free societies,
creates markets and trade partners for the United States, and fosters good will abroad.
Spending less than 1 percent of the total federal budget, USAID works in over 100 countries
to:
 Promote broadly shared economic prosperity;
 Strengthen democracy and good governance;
 Protect human rights;
 Improve global health,
 Advance food security and agriculture;
 Improve environmental sustainability;
 Further education;
 Help societies prevent and recover from conflicts; and
 Provide humanitarian assistance in the wake of natural and man-made disasters.

Celebrating Fifty Years of Progress
When the United States Agency for International
Development (USAID) was created, it brought
together several existing foreign assistance
organizations and programs. Until then, there
had never been a single agency charged with
foreign economic development, so with the
passage of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961
(pdf) by Congress, U.S. foreign assistance activities underwent a major transformation.
