Managing Projects with Microsoft Project 2013
Virtual Training
Course description
The “Managing Projects with Microsoft Project 2013” training is
an instructor-led, three-day, hands-on, virtual training that
provides attendees with the knowledge and skills to build,
maintain, and control project plans with Microsoft Project 2013
and 2010 versions. The training is led by a live, UMT Institute
instructor with practical project management knowledge. The
class demo will be presented with the 2013 version while supporting the
2010 version. The hands on exercises will be offered in both 2013 and
2010 versions.
The training is divided into three, four-hour long segments. Each
topic starts with a presentation and a demo followed by a set of
hands-on exercises. While solving the exercises, attendees will be
able to ask questions and get guidance from the instructor who
will demonstrate the solution on the shared screen. In this
training, attendees will create project plans containing tasks and
milestones, organize tasks in a Work Breakdown Structures,
define task relationships, create and assign resources, optimize
and baseline the project plan for implementation, track and analyze progress, update project plans, and create views
and reports. Attendees of the training will learn how to plan, manage, solve execution problems, track, share, and
report on the projects using the best project management principles and practices.
The “Managing Projects with Microsoft Project 2013” virtual training includes:
 Reviewing the basics of Project Management processes and concepts as enabled by the tool during the lifecycle of
the project.
 Understanding the usage of functions of Microsoft Project 2013:
 Creating project plans with both manually and automatically scheduled tasks;
 Managing and tracking projects;
 Managing project financials: costing and budgeting;
 Communicating project status using reports and charts.
 Learning the configuration and settings of Microsoft Project 2013.
Managing Projects with Microsoft Project 2013 is
aligned with the requirements for the Microsoft
certification and is eligible for 12 PDUs from PMI.

Objectives of the Training
After attending this training, attendees will be able to:
 Create project plans and project templates;
 Define conditions and constraints that govern project tasks;
 Define costs and budgets for resource and other project expenses;
 Assign resources, create schedules, and establish project baselines;
 Manage project execution; analyze and interpret project-related information;
 Use tracking tools to maintain control during project execution;
 Measure performance; calculating and analyzing earned values;
 Utilize and modify built-in reports or create custom reports to suit specific needs.
Agenda
The “Managing Projects with Microsoft Project 2013” virtual training is divided into three, four-hour segments. The
trainer may change the sequence of the training elements if needed.
Module 1: What’s New:
 Understanding the Microsoft Project 2013 command structure and navigation;
 Using the ribbons and help feature;
 Understanding the principles of the Fluent User Interface.
Module 2: Defining Deliverables and Tasks:
 Creating, opening, closing projects; using project templates;
 Creating, entering, and editing tasks and milestones;
 Creating a Project Summary task;
 Creating the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) with phases and an outline;
 Setting and viewing WBS codes;
 Documenting task information;
 Creating and modifying templates;
 Using configuration options to tailor your work.
Module 3: Entering Estimates:
 Defining durations;
 Using estimated durations;
 Applying the Task Mode and Task Inspector to manage tasks manually or automatically;
 Using PERT analysis for duration estimates.
Module 4: Creating Dependencies:
 Defining task dependencies;
 Using dependency types;
 Entering lead and lag time;
 Viewing the network diagram.

Module 5: Assigning Resources:
 Creating work, cost, and material resources;
 Defining resources costs: fixed, standard, and overtime rates;
 Creating calendars, defining working and non-working time;
 Associating calendars with resources, projects, and tasks;
 Setting project costs and project budgets;
 Assigning, replacing, and removing resources, including using the Team Planner;
 Understanding task types: fixed duration, fixed work, fixed units, effort driven.
Module 6: Optimizing the Schedule:
 Viewing the critical path and project and task slacks;
 Using the task path to assess impact of predecessors and successors;
 Examining methods for shortening the critical path;
 Analyzing resource utilization and addressing resource over-allocation;
 Leveling resources, specifying leveling timeframes;
 Defining task constraints and deadlines.
Module 7 Updating the Schedule:
 Setting, saving, and updating the project baseline;
 Updating actual work: % complete, completed and remaining work, actual and remaining durations;
 Setting the status date, viewing slippage, and applying progress lines;
 Entering time-phased work values;
 Using the Tracking Gantt;
 Examining Earned Value Analysis indicators.
Module 8: Reporting:
 Sorting, filtering, and grouping;
 Applying and customizing views, tables, filters, and groups;
 Formatting the text, bars, timescale, and gridlines;
 Using the enhanced Copy & Paste and Copy Picture;
 Configuring Print and Page Setup options;
 Developing dashboards and combinations of reports;
 Creating and modifying Visual Reports;
 Using the Timeline view.
Module 9: Consolidating Projects:
 Creating a master plan;
 Creating inter-project dependencies;
 Managing resources using a shared resource pool.
Training Material
The instructor will share the following training materials at the beginning of the first session:
 Reference presentation document, which includes tool descriptions and screenshots;
 Exercise book which includes instructions on how to perform the exercises;
 Exercise files which includes a set of project plans used during the training exercises.
Topics not Included in this Training
The training does not cover the following topics:
 Project Management theory (only basic principles will be covered throughout the training as they relate to
the use of Microsoft Project 2013);
 Project Financial Management (only basics will be covered as part of the training);
 The use of Project Server in managing enterprise projects;
 Project Portfolio Management theory and tools.

  • 1. Managing Projects with Microsoft Project 2013 Virtual Training Course description The “Managing Projects with Microsoft Project 2013” training is an instructor-led, three-day, hands-on, virtual training that provides attendees with the knowledge and skills to build, maintain, and control project plans with Microsoft Project 2013 and 2010 versions. The training is led by a live, UMT Institute instructor with practical project management knowledge. The class demo will be presented with the 2013 version while supporting the 2010 version. The hands on exercises will be offered in both 2013 and 2010 versions. The training is divided into three, four-hour long segments. Each topic starts with a presentation and a demo followed by a set of hands-on exercises. While solving the exercises, attendees will be able to ask questions and get guidance from the instructor who will demonstrate the solution on the shared screen. In this training, attendees will create project plans containing tasks and milestones, organize tasks in a Work Breakdown Structures, define task relationships, create and assign resources, optimize and baseline the project plan for implementation, track and analyze progress, update project plans, and create views and reports. Attendees of the training will learn how to plan, manage, solve execution problems, track, share, and report on the projects using the best project management principles and practices. The “Managing Projects with Microsoft Project 2013” virtual training includes:  Reviewing the basics of Project Management processes and concepts as enabled by the tool during the lifecycle of the project.  Understanding the usage of functions of Microsoft Project 2013:  Creating project plans with both manually and automatically scheduled tasks;  Managing and tracking projects;  Managing project financials: costing and budgeting;  Communicating project status using reports and charts.  Learning the configuration and settings of Microsoft Project 2013. Managing Projects with Microsoft Project 2013 is aligned with the requirements for the Microsoft certification and is eligible for 12 PDUs from PMI.
  • 2. <2> Objectives of the Training After attending this training, attendees will be able to:  Create project plans and project templates;  Define conditions and constraints that govern project tasks;  Define costs and budgets for resource and other project expenses;  Assign resources, create schedules, and establish project baselines;  Manage project execution; analyze and interpret project-related information;  Use tracking tools to maintain control during project execution;  Measure performance; calculating and analyzing earned values;  Utilize and modify built-in reports or create custom reports to suit specific needs. Agenda The “Managing Projects with Microsoft Project 2013” virtual training is divided into three, four-hour segments. The trainer may change the sequence of the training elements if needed. Module 1: What’s New:  Understanding the Microsoft Project 2013 command structure and navigation;  Using the ribbons and help feature;  Understanding the principles of the Fluent User Interface. Module 2: Defining Deliverables and Tasks:  Creating, opening, closing projects; using project templates;  Creating, entering, and editing tasks and milestones;  Creating a Project Summary task;  Creating the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) with phases and an outline;  Setting and viewing WBS codes;  Documenting task information;  Creating and modifying templates;  Using configuration options to tailor your work. Module 3: Entering Estimates:  Defining durations;  Using estimated durations;  Applying the Task Mode and Task Inspector to manage tasks manually or automatically;  Using PERT analysis for duration estimates. Module 4: Creating Dependencies:  Defining task dependencies;  Using dependency types;  Entering lead and lag time;  Viewing the network diagram.
  • 3. <3> Module 5: Assigning Resources:  Creating work, cost, and material resources;  Defining resources costs: fixed, standard, and overtime rates;  Creating calendars, defining working and non-working time;  Associating calendars with resources, projects, and tasks;  Setting project costs and project budgets;  Assigning, replacing, and removing resources, including using the Team Planner;  Understanding task types: fixed duration, fixed work, fixed units, effort driven. Module 6: Optimizing the Schedule:  Viewing the critical path and project and task slacks;  Using the task path to assess impact of predecessors and successors;  Examining methods for shortening the critical path;  Analyzing resource utilization and addressing resource over-allocation;  Leveling resources, specifying leveling timeframes;  Defining task constraints and deadlines. Module 7 Updating the Schedule:  Setting, saving, and updating the project baseline;  Updating actual work: % complete, completed and remaining work, actual and remaining durations;  Setting the status date, viewing slippage, and applying progress lines;  Entering time-phased work values;  Using the Tracking Gantt;  Examining Earned Value Analysis indicators. Module 8: Reporting:  Sorting, filtering, and grouping;  Applying and customizing views, tables, filters, and groups;  Formatting the text, bars, timescale, and gridlines;  Using the enhanced Copy & Paste and Copy Picture;  Configuring Print and Page Setup options;  Developing dashboards and combinations of reports;  Creating and modifying Visual Reports;  Using the Timeline view. Module 9: Consolidating Projects:  Creating a master plan;  Creating inter-project dependencies;  Managing resources using a shared resource pool.

Training Material The instructor will share the following training materials at the beginning of the first session:  Reference presentation document, which includes tool descriptions and screenshots;  Exercise book which includes instructions on how to perform the exercises;  Exercise files which includes a set of project plans used during the training exercises. Topics not Included in this Training The training does not cover the following topics:  Project Management theory (only basic principles will be covered throughout the training as they relate to the use of Microsoft Project 2013);  Project Financial Management (only basics will be covered as part of the training);  The use of Project Server in managing enterprise projects;  Project Portfolio Management theory and tools.
