New Trends in Media Literacy – Presentation on FEB2013

Editor's Notes

  1. Family & Media are an organisation that work to influence media – and media users – with Christian faith and good values.
  2. New trends in media literacy. Just to give the framework for this speech: This will not be an academic presentation of trends in media. My main focus is on a personal level, in everyday media use, and how we as Christians – and church – shall respond to that. I hope that my perspective can be from a follower of Christ, from a normal Christian, longing to see myself, my family, and the global church be witnesses of our Lord and Saviour – in every part of life. And when I see the statistics of media use in Norway – and also from USA – I surely know that this is a part of life that we have to ask what it means to follow Christ. I apologize for any errors in my language, written or spoken. You are free to correct me during this speech if you like. Or you can interpret for yourself what I´m saying into what you would prefer me to say. 
  3. Access Analyze Evaluate Create (and maybe respond to) When we have analysed and evaluated the media messages, how do we respond to them, how do we act?
  4. Before we go to the (so called) trends, let me give you a term from John Stott: “double listening”. What is that?
  5. ”We’re called to listen both to the Word of God, and to today’s world, in order to relate the one to the other.” Rev Dr John Stott   Double listening has always been important. Just think of Paul in Athens, in Acts 17. But in our age of globalisation, with the Internet (especially social media) as essential tools, It´s maybe more important than ever. It is also a basic for Damaris, which you heard about yesterday. If we try to listen to the world – and maybe most of all to the media world, what do we hear? What are the trends we see, the trends that influences us and changes us?
  6. In the end of the day, it is about what God´s heart is saying. Listen to the word and to the world. Let´s take a brief look at some trends – and the need for awareness and competence:
  7. The media is (rapidly) changing – and it will continue We can not and must not pretend that the changes are not happening. We need the ability to understand the changes. To analyse. To evaluate. To reveal the lies and embrace the truth. To understand how they affect us. And to be pro active when it comes to use of new media as a tool for building the Kingdom of God Changes are a part of being a human. Changes are a part of being alive. So please invest in being a media worker, and maybe a parent, who are out there, searching for changes. ”Of Issachar, men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do” 1 Chronicles 12:32
  8. 2. It goes fast (speed) Google has ten postulates, ten sentences which has laid the foundation for their success. One of them is: “Fast is better than slow.” I like that.  When I should go on the Internet in 2000, I brought a book. I needed to do something while I waited for the website to load. I like the new speed (new in meaning the last ten years). But this gives some challenges if we bring this (attitude? holdning) in to other areas in life. The speed hasn´t necessarily given us more time. Ironically it´s more like the opposite. We may have time for the fast stuff, but do we have time for slow thinking, for growing, for waiting – important areas in live, especially as followers of Christ? We have instant access, instant coffee and instant dinners in a plastic (bag?). And I´m afraid that we want instant answers to the big questions in life: How do I find meaning in life? What is truth? Where can I find happiness? Where can I find love? I´m glad for the technological speed, but we need the awareness to not bring the speed into the most important areas in life. We need the ability to slow down, to stop. (Bibelvers)
  9. 3. Availybility One other “trend” is that we are always online, always availabile. We have broadband, mobile broadband, wireless networks – even in public spaces. And through our mobile phones we can get in touch with the whole world all the time. Does this influence us? We spoke about speed. Now it is about being available, all the time. Does this gives us more stress? Less stress, easier to connect with people? Does this strengthen our relations, or do the relations suffer from this? Are you able to turn off your mobile phone, to go offline? If speed – even if it´s a good trend – gives us the need to know how to slow down, to stop, the Online-world gives us the need to know how to be silent.
  10. “Be still”. A Norwegian translation says: “Stop”. We need the ability to stop and be still. Sometimes we are like hamsters. We hoard a lot of stuff, and we keep running in this wheel that leads us nowhere. We need to learn, and we need to model it to the next generation, to be silent. Lower our shoulders, get out of the running wheel, and realise that God is God. “Be still and know that I am God”. Can you hear it? Can you hear him? God is God. Or are you busy being online – or somewhere else …? With Him lies the salvation, the peace and the strength. With him lies the Life. Media literacy for a Christian does also mean the ability to stop, to be still.
  11. 4. We have access to the whole world Through one click, one tap with our finger, all the content in the world are accessible on the screen, from wonderful stuff that honours God and equip us in our walk with him – to child rape, brutal murders and de-humanising ideologies like Nazism. There we have content that can enrich us, in many ways, and there are content there which can destroy us. Am I afraid of the Internet, of the new media? I am afraid of it in the same way that I am afraid of the traffic, especially when it comes to my children. Respect is maybe a better word. The solution is not to avoid the traffic – not if you shall be able to go anywhere. For me, as a father, I need to teach my children how to behave safe between cars, bikes and buses, to know where to go and where not to go. The same counts for the Internet. We need the awareness that there are dangers there, that there are content that may destroy your life – (porn addiction is one powerful trap). But we also need to know how to maneuver in this area. Because the Internet is here to stay … How can we walk in the light in our media use? And how can we equip the church to honour God through their media use? I think that this is really important when it comes to discipleship and mission. For an unconscious use of media drains the the church for power, I believe. This access is a part of the globalisation that we see in the world today.
  12. 5. Globalisation   The wold gets smaller and the distance between people becomes shorter and shorter, especially when it comes to our culture. This is driven by different processes, where media play an important role. This means that different values and worldviews are a bigger part of our everyday life. Therefore there is a greater need than ever for the church to have the ability to recognise different worldviews and know how to respond to them. When the world is presented for a buffet of different worldviews, how can we learn them – the Christians included – to separate truth from lies? When people are asking what truth is – or believe the lie that truth is relative, how can we give an answer that is consistent and meets their needs? We need to listen, to recognise the lies that they have come to believe, and “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ,” as Paul says in 2 Chorintians 10:5. Use the Damaris rescources that is available on their websites. That is a good start. But it needs practise. And maybe some ”double listening for dummies”.  I need it, and have asked for is. Maybe Damaris and Family and Media is able to produce some recources which is easily understood and useful for every church and Christian. (It´s not a promise, but a hope  )
  13. 6. We are communicating This is very interesting trend, and maybe one of the biggest shift in media history We have changed from media consumers – to media users (interaction through social media). Now we want to participate, to create ourselves, to comment, to like, to share. We are now How can we, as church, respond to this?
  14. We expect dialogues, to take part, to interact, to share. The communication through media is not longer reserved for the professionals. We must not underestimate the power of listening, sharing and good discussions, also in the digital world.
  15. To have a profile on Facebook or Twitter doesn´t mean that you are a part of the digital party. You need to participate, and do it with a purpose. If not, will you waste your time. Build relationships, learn to know other people, be inspired by articles or quotes. And so on.
  16. I can´t say this strong enough: Maybe the most important in social media, is to listen. To show people so much respect, that you are interested in what they say and think of. Listen to the Word, how it relates to others lives. Social media is not another tool where we can deliver our message. The nature of Social media is about listening. If you don´t listen, you don´t deserve to be heard. So easy. So hard.
