INTRODUCTION
Teaching is becoming one of the most challenging professions in our society where
knowledge is expanding rapidly and modern technologies are demanding teachers to learn how
to use these technologies in their teaching. While new technologies increase teacher’s training
needs, they also offer part of the solution. Information and communication technology (ICT) can
provide more flexible and effective ways for professional development for teachers, improve
pre-and in-service teacher training and connect teachers to the global teacher community.
The use of information and communication technology (ICT) such as Internet
applications, CD-ROMs, video technology and various computer attachments and software
programs have caused many changes in society. These changes have not just been of a technical
nature but more importantly of a structural nature. Many of the major institutions of our society
have changed and the way we live our daily lives have been impacted. However, the impact on
education may just beginning to be felt as teachers integrate this new technology into their
teaching. In the early stages of the use of ICT in teaching, looking at the experiences of teachers
at a high school in the forefront provides some clues as to what possibilities and problems may
be presented with this new technology.
INFORMATION COMMUNICATION AND TECHNOLOGY
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are often associated with the most
sophisticated and expensive computer-based technologies. But ICTs also encompass the more
conventional technologies such as radio, television and telephone technology. While definitions
of ICTs are varied, it might be useful to accept the definition provided by United Nations
Development Programme : ‘ICTs are basically information-handling tools- a varied set of goods,
applications and services that are used to produce, store, process, distribute and exchange
information. They include the ‘old’ ICTs of radio, television and telephone, and the ‘new’ ICTs
of computers, satellite and wireless technology and the Internet. These different tools are now
able to work together, and combine to form our ‘networked world’ – a massive infrastructure of
interconnected telephone services, standardized computing hardware, the internet, radio and
television, which reaches into every corner of the globe’. When we talk of ICTs, we refer not
only to the latest computer and Internet based technologies, but also to simple audio visual aids
such as the transparency and slides, tape and cassette recorders and radio; video cassettes and
television; and film. These older and more familiar technologies are referred to under the
collective heading of “analogue media” while the newer computer and Internet based
technologies are called the “digital media
DIMENSIONS OF ICT
There are many important dimensions to ICT education, including:
 ICT/Digital Literacy – Today, everyone needs a basic understanding of ICT and how
to make productive use of it, just to be good students, workers and citizens. Teaching
people how to be competent basic users of ICT technologies is an important role of
ICT education, so they will be successful in their academic and work careers, and so
they can efficiently participate in modern technical society
 ICT Infrastructure and Support Applied Technologists – Beyond a basic user
competency, our society also needs more knowledgeable and capable technical people
to deploy manage and maintain ICT equipment, software and systems, so they work
well for users. In all industries, these people manage computer and communications
hardware, software and applications; networked systems; online information sharing,
communication and commerce systems; business processes making use of these
systems; and user support.
 Specialized Business and Industry Uses of ICT – As enabling technologies, ICT is
used strategically in almost all businesses and industries. Many have developed
specialized systems and uses of ICT, and many have specialized legal and regulatory
requirements; quality control systems; integrations with production and research
equipment and systems; security requirements; and software applications.
 ICT Research and Development Scientists – ICT fields themselves are under
constant pressure to evolve and improve. We need people who deeply understand the
science and technologies underlying ICT and who can work to advance the fields.
ICT INTEGRATED TEACHING- LEARNING OF COMMERCE
The teachers also need to make lists of the name of the students for monitoring and recording
their academic performance and to analyze and perform a statistical analysis to take some
corrective measure if any, in the lesson plan, delivery of instruction. Spreadsheets can be a good
choice for creating class lists, recording their performance and executing statistical analysis upon
them.
While delivering the class lectures, any innovative teacher needs to draw diagrams, show
pictures, animate some objects to explain critical concepts, even play some video clipping of real
time operation. All these multimedia applications can assure very productive, interesting,
motivating, interactive and quality delivery of classroom instruction. Presentation software like
power point can be a good choice for teachers for performing such tasks
Learners always look for flexibility in time, space, place, content selection and delivery of
instructions. It was quite impossible to satisfy such requirements in earlier times due to the non-
availability of proper tools. It is now feasible and possible to implement open & flexible learning
strategies using ICT as tools. Flexible access to content and learning resources via network
across conventional class rooms, homes and community centres is the defining characteristic of
what has come to be known also as distributed learning
In designing learning materials using ICT productivity tools certain pedagogical principles needs
to be considered carefully. Mere ICT tools by themselves do not make good pedagogy. The
critical question in education is- in what ways ICT can enhance learning and teaching practices.
Broadly ICT tools help to open up opportunities for learning by enabling four major key
processes in transforming teaching and learning as follows:
Access ideas and information from diverse sources through searching, locating, selecting, and
authenticating material in a wide range of multimedia forms;
Extend ideas and information through processing, manipulating, analyzing & publishing
material in different multimedia forms;
Transform ideas and information into new or different forms through synthesizing, modelling,
simulating and creating material in many multimedia styles and formats; and
Share ideas and information across local, national and international networks by interacting
electronically with others in actual and/or delayed time
. Access, extend, transform and share represent key processes by which students learn and
become independent learners and self-starters. Through the processes learners express their
creativity and imagination. These processes can be applied in all areas of learning and in all
levels of education. There are three broad categories of educational software namely, Generic
tools for learning, Content-based resources and Interactive instructional courseware. Starting
from productivity tools to simulation & modelling, there are various generic tools that help
learners to access, extend, transform and share information. Content-based resources help
learners to access a vast source of educational resources that effectively can be integrated with
the curriculum objectives. Interactive instructional courseware are basically self-paced learning
materials. These programs are helpful to learners to control their learning at their own place and
convenience.
The integration of ICT with teaching and learning has produced some of the significant positive
gains in learners’ knowledge, skills and attitudes by providing the following key advantages:
• Explore and represent information dynamically and in many forms
• Become socially aware and more confident
• Increase motivation
• Communicate effectively about complex processes
• Develop better understanding and broader view of processes and systems
The following mode or methodologies of learning, the utility of Information communication and
technology plays an essential role in the modern educational set up.
INTERNET
Internet is a network where thousands of computers are connected to a worldwide network
through a common communication protocol. Internet today has grown into a forty million user
network and continues to grow at the rate of an estimated twenty thousand users every day.
Internet is undoubtedly, the world’s wonder network, carrying information on almost anu subject
under the sun.
E-LEARNING
The term E-Learning is derived from ‘electronic learning’ and refers to technology based
learning or the ‘electronic’ delivery of learning. It covers a wide range of distributed knowledge
applications and processes, including computer-based learning, web-based learning, virtual
classrooms, and digital collaboration. Thus, E-Learning includes the delivery of content via all
electronic media, including the Internet, Intranets. Extranets etc..
POWER POINT PRESENTATION
Now a day the computers play a vital role in the storage, retrieval and transmission of
information. Most of the colleges and schools are tapping information through this media for
curriculum transaction. Presentation software’s are used to present and idea, topic, message,
lecture, information, etc on a subject, in front of an audience using computer system and LCD
projector.
CD-ROMs
CDs are developed to help the users interact easily. The content or topic to be taught are
programmed and stored in the CDs with multimedia features and effect. CD ROMs are the
storage media used to record, retrieve, read and replay the digitally formatted content of
programmes and packages.
CONCLUSION
Mere learning ICT skills is not suffice, but using ICT to improve the teaching and learning is the
key for pedagogy-technology integration. To start with he or she needs to prepare lesson plans
and compile lesson materials for the classroom lecture. To prepare such materials one has to go
through the act of drafting phase, editing phase, revising phase and finally publishing the lesson
plans and course contents. Word processor can be a great help to accomplish this task in a
professional and productive way to avoid repetition, duplication of manual work and concentrate
on quality of the course materials.

  • 8. Transform ideas and information into new or different forms through synthesizing, modelling, simulating and creating material in many multimedia styles and formats; and Share ideas and information across local, national and international networks by interacting electronically with others in actual and/or delayed time . Access, extend, transform and share represent key processes by which students learn and become independent learners and self-starters. Through the processes learners express their creativity and imagination. These processes can be applied in all areas of learning and in all levels of education. There are three broad categories of educational software namely, Generic tools for learning, Content-based resources and Interactive instructional courseware. Starting from productivity tools to simulation & modelling, there are various generic tools that help learners to access, extend, transform and share information. Content-based resources help learners to access a vast source of educational resources that effectively can be integrated with the curriculum objectives. Interactive instructional courseware are basically self-paced learning materials. These programs are helpful to learners to control their learning at their own place and convenience. The integration of ICT with teaching and learning has produced some of the significant positive gains in learners’ knowledge, skills and attitudes by providing the following key advantages: • Explore and represent information dynamically and in many forms • Become socially aware and more confident • Increase motivation • Communicate effectively about complex processes • Develop better understanding and broader view of processes and systems
  • 9. The following mode or methodologies of learning, the utility of Information communication and technology plays an essential role in the modern educational set up. INTERNET Internet is a network where thousands of computers are connected to a worldwide network through a common communication protocol. Internet today has grown into a forty million user network and continues to grow at the rate of an estimated twenty thousand users every day. Internet is undoubtedly, the world’s wonder network, carrying information on almost anu subject under the sun. E-LEARNING The term E-Learning is derived from ‘electronic learning’ and refers to technology based learning or the ‘electronic’ delivery of learning. It covers a wide range of distributed knowledge applications and processes, including computer-based learning, web-based learning, virtual classrooms, and digital collaboration. Thus, E-Learning includes the delivery of content via all electronic media, including the Internet, Intranets. Extranets etc.. POWER POINT PRESENTATION Now a day the computers play a vital role in the storage, retrieval and transmission of information. Most of the colleges and schools are tapping information through this media for curriculum transaction. Presentation software’s are used to present and idea, topic, message, lecture, information, etc on a subject, in front of an audience using computer system and LCD projector. CD-ROMs CDs are developed to help the users interact easily. The content or topic to be taught are programmed and stored in the CDs with multimedia features and effect. CD ROMs are the storage media used to record, retrieve, read and replay the digitally formatted content of programmes and packages.
  • 10. CONCLUSION Mere learning ICT skills is not suffice, but using ICT to improve the teaching and learning is the key for pedagogy-technology integration. To start with he or she needs to prepare lesson plans and compile lesson materials for the classroom lecture. To prepare such materials one has to go through the act of drafting phase, editing phase, revising phase and finally publishing the lesson plans and course contents. Word processor can be a great help to accomplish this task in a professional and productive way to avoid repetition, duplication of manual work and concentrate on quality of the course materials.
