10. GEW Observations:
Building Economies the American Way
For example:
• Data: e.g. US. Net job growth occurs in the U.S.
economy only through startup firms. From 1980-
2008, firms less than five years old accounted for
all net job growth
• Trends: e.g. as older firms recede, high growth
firms create the new wealth and jobs by injecting
dynamism
• Models: e.g. Startup America, Startup Act, 500
Startups, Techstars, Kauffman, Silicon Valley

11. GEW Observations: Diminishing
National Boundaries, Common Cultures
Ideas are unleashed by teams and networks of individuals not
institutions.
Informal networks enable the quick formation of teams from any
nation who either succeed… or recycle fast and then re-group in a
different team for a new idea.

The Science of Startups, Some Findings

experienced co-founder with unique
knowledge of the industry to make a
disruptive idea into an innovation
• Networks:

• Iterative and Scientific
Test vision continuously - validate, build your
plane in the air, measure, learn…do it again
• Keeping Lean/Affording to Fail
Be lean as long as you can – new caution
about outside venture capital and the foreign
control it brings
