Castle boyrtzi
1. A small island in front of the port of
Nafplio completely covered by an old
Venetian castle, to which it has its name.
It was originally named by the sailors of
Saint Theodore. During the first
Venetian domination (1389 - 1540) and
specifically in 1473, after Mahmut
Pasha's departure, the Venetians
fortified it with a tower, where they set
firearms. It was then called Castelli or
Bourtzi and later Passage - Pass

2. The first fortification - in 1473 - was made by
the Venetian Predictor Pasqualigo, who
assigned the work to architect Antonio
Gambello. The Turks returned in 1540.
Morozin again occupied Bourtzi in 1686 and
overthrew the Turkish guard. From Bourtzi to
the opposite jetty there was a chain that
closed the port at night. Because of this it was
called Anapli Porto Katena, or "Port of Alysos",
during the years of the Great Republic
