The document discusses increasing adoption of blended and online learning at universities. It provides research showing that blended and online learning can save institutions money and produce equal or better learning outcomes compared to traditional face-to-face instruction. The document then discusses barriers to faculty adoption, such as lack of time and support, and provides strategies for increasing adoption, including assessing opportunities and priorities, and targeting administrators, newer faculty, and certain disciplines that may be more receptive to online learning.

Can Produce Better Learning Outcomes
than Traditional Face-to-Face Instruction
• "Students in online conditions performed better, on average, than
those learning the same material through traditional face-to-face
instruction. "
• "Instruction combining online and face-to-face elements had a larger
advantage relative to purely face-to-face instruction than did purely
online instruction."
• "Most of the variations in the way in which different studies
implemented online learning did not affect student learning outcomes
significantly. "
• "The effectiveness of online learning approaches appears quite broad
across different content and learner types" (undergraduate &

10. What you should know about Faculty
and Administration…. Surprise?
• Administrators are far more optimistic about the
growth of online learning than faculty.
• The more exposure faculty have to online
learning, the more positive they are about it.
• Faculty at 2 year Colleges are more positive about
online learning than faculty at 4 year Institutions.
• The bigger the University, the more reluctant the
faculty member.

14. Three Key Barriers to Faculty Adoption
• Lack of Time
• Lack of Appropriate and Sufficient Support
• Unreliable Technology
14
15. Exercise
Small Groups:
– Select an institution
– Discuss the Adoption Health Check questions
– Who would you need to talk to, to get these
questions answered?
– Given what you know about the institution, and
looking at the “Road Map” what would be their
priorities for increasing adoption?
– Where are your opportunities for sales?
15
16. Report back from large groups
• What did you discover?
• Was the process useful?
• How receptive do you think your
institutions would be to this process?
16
19. Sell the Importance of Adoption
• Using Blackboard to its fullest will save you money and produce at least as good
student results, if not better whether your delivery is supplemental, blended, or fully
online.
• When we say 'using Blackboard', we mean going online with the best solution and
practices in the market.
• When we say 'it will save you money', there are credible examples and research to
show that you can save up to 35% by moving to fully online learning and 19%
moving to a blended model.
• Education is a business. In many places it is a huge business. Nevertheless,
aceducators don’t talk about the business of education. What education does talk
about is things like student performance, access & retention, prestige and rankings.
• Our job is to sell the value of adoption in the customer lifecycle because it leads to
opportunity for the client and for Blackboard:
• So: for an investment of X you will see a return of Y within Z years.

Editor's Notes
Well, at least my wife still thinks I’m handsome. My kids used to think I was smart, but now they are in college so nobody over 30 is smart anymore.Really, you can read the bio behind me if you like, but the reason I am up here is that I have a lot of experience at universities with trying to change institutional and faculty behavior. In this case, I am here to talk about faculty adoption of technology.
