Introduction
The analysis of chlorine has become more and more important in the recent
years. The use of substitute fuel in cement plants, brickyards and other
industries with high demand for energy requires easy, low maintenance
chlorine analysis.
Traditionally chlorine determination is done using Schöninger digestion,
which is very time consuming and difficult to automate. Therefore, high
temperature combustion followed by coulometric detection of the formed
HCl has gained more and more interest. Still widely used, however, the
coulometric method has several major drawbacks. It requires a substantial
amount of maintenance effort due to the electrolyte solution needing to be
replaced very frequently, and the electrodes are susceptible to wear out.
Moreover, the dynamic range is limited to lower concentrations with this
approach. Ion chromatography in combination with conductivity detection
on the other hand is a more stable technique and allows the separate
determination of all halogens. The drawback of this solution is the very
high investment costs.
Elementar as the pioneer of elemental analysis has developed a simpler
alternative. The combination of the well-proven, state-of-the-art elemental
analyzers with high performance solid state electrochemical detectors (ECD)
makes chlorine analysis much easier, more reliable and more precise than
ever before. It allows chlorine measurements over a larger concentration
range with low maintenance effort.

Measuring principle
The sample is transferred from the sample carousel into
the combustion tube through a blank-free ball valve.
Unlike systems with a horizontal furnace this does not
require difficult mechanics and/or compressed air to feed
the samples into the combustion tube.
The sample then enters the high-temperature combustion
zone, which ensures 100% transformation of all chlorine to
HCl. In the next step water is efficiently removed from the
carrier gas to avoid condensation and loss of HCl. The carrier
gas finally passes the solid-state electrochemical detector
to detect the HCl (see Figure 1). This default configuration is
available for the rapid CS cube, vario MICRO cube, vario EL
cube and vario MACRO cube models.
In some cases the ECD cell shows a slight cross sensitivity to
CO2, resulting in a small negative peak at the beginning of
the integration. For higher Cl concentrations (> 100 ppm)
this does not significantly contribute to the resulting
chlorine concentration. For low concentrations as in
gasoline this small negative peak may influence the results.
For this reason the setup of the chlorine option of the trace
SN cube, which is optimized for low Cl contents, is slightly
different (see Figure 2). After removing the moisture from
the carrier gas, the HCl is trapped on a special trap column.
After the combustion process and removal of interferences,
the trap column heats to release HCl, which is then
detected in the solid-state electrochemical detector. The
Advanced Purge and Trap technology leads to peak focusing
that significantly improves the signal-to-noise ratio and
guarantees highest sensitivity.
Evaluation of the detector signal is done on a standard
PC. The entire process is fully automated for easy use and
overnight operation.

Electrochemical detection
The following reactions occur in the electrochemical cell:
working electrode: Ag + HCl → AgCl + H+ + e
reference electrode: O2 + 4e + 4H+ → 2H2O

Calibration
There are several standards that can be used for calibration.
If no capsule press is available ammonium chloride (Cl
content 65.97%) is the substance of choice. Moreover, the
high solubility of chlorine in water is ideal for preparing
standard solutions. Another possible calibration standard
could be oil with a defined amount of Cl or if available
matrix specific chlorine standards. Usually these standards
can be used without accelerants. Figure 6, for example,
shows a typical calibration curve, obtained by a coal
standard with 0.11% Cl on the rapid CS cube with Cl-option.

The electrons produced in this reaction lower the current
between working and reference electrode, which is a
measure for the HCl concentration in the carrier gas. This
detection method can be described as amperometric
detection. The capillary diffusion barrier is basically a hole
whose diameter determines the sensitivity of the cell.
The electrolyte is a concentrated, non-oxidizing acid. A
schematic diagram of the electrochemical cell is shown in
Figure 3. Chemistry dictates that the ECD cell can also be
affected by high concentrations of HBr, but this is rarely
seen in practice.

Typical applications
The chlorine detection option is optimized for applications in the area of fuel, residual fuel, biomass, waste, soil, along
with others. Due to limitations in precision and accuracy, it is not recommended to use the Cl-option for classical elemental
analysis (e.g. to determine the Cl content in pure chemicals). The following table shows some typical applications for the
Cl-option.

Available EC cells
Elementar provides three different types of electrochemical
cells depending on the concentration range. The names
of the cells refer to the maximum HCl concentration in
the gas stream which can be analyzed. Note that this
concentration cannot directly be transferred to the Cl
content of the sample.
The characteristics of the different electrochemical cells are
presented in the following table.

Chlorine measurements over a larger concentration range with low maintenance effort

  • 1. Introduction The analysis of chlorine has become more and more important in the recent years. The use of substitute fuel in cement plants, brickyards and other industries with high demand for energy requires easy, low maintenance chlorine analysis. Traditionally chlorine determination is done using Schöninger digestion, which is very time consuming and difficult to automate. Therefore, high temperature combustion followed by coulometric detection of the formed HCl has gained more and more interest. Still widely used, however, the coulometric method has several major drawbacks. It requires a substantial amount of maintenance effort due to the electrolyte solution needing to be replaced very frequently, and the electrodes are susceptible to wear out. Moreover, the dynamic range is limited to lower concentrations with this approach. Ion chromatography in combination with conductivity detection on the other hand is a more stable technique and allows the separate determination of all halogens. The drawback of this solution is the very high investment costs. Elementar as the pioneer of elemental analysis has developed a simpler alternative. The combination of the well-proven, state-of-the-art elemental analyzers with high performance solid state electrochemical detectors (ECD) makes chlorine analysis much easier, more reliable and more precise than ever before. It allows chlorine measurements over a larger concentration range with low maintenance effort.   • 2. Measuring principle The sample is transferred from the sample carousel into the combustion tube through a blank-free ball valve. Unlike systems with a horizontal furnace this does not require difficult mechanics and/or compressed air to feed the samples into the combustion tube. The sample then enters the high-temperature combustion zone, which ensures 100% transformation of all chlorine to HCl. In the next step water is efficiently removed from the carrier gas to avoid condensation and loss of HCl. The carrier gas finally passes the solid-state electrochemical detector to detect the HCl (see Figure 1). This default configuration is available for the rapid CS cube, vario MICRO cube, vario EL cube and vario MACRO cube models. In some cases the ECD cell shows a slight cross sensitivity to CO2, resulting in a small negative peak at the beginning of the integration. For higher Cl concentrations (> 100 ppm) this does not significantly contribute to the resulting chlorine concentration. For low concentrations as in gasoline this small negative peak may influence the results. For this reason the setup of the chlorine option of the trace SN cube, which is optimized for low Cl contents, is slightly different (see Figure 2). After removing the moisture from the carrier gas, the HCl is trapped on a special trap column. After the combustion process and removal of interferences, the trap column heats to release HCl, which is then detected in the solid-state electrochemical detector. The Advanced Purge and Trap technology leads to peak focusing that significantly improves the signal-to-noise ratio and guarantees highest sensitivity. Evaluation of the detector signal is done on a standard PC. The entire process is fully automated for easy use and overnight operation. Electrochemical detection The following reactions occur in the electrochemical cell: working electrode: Ag + HCl → AgCl + H+ + e reference electrode: O2 + 4e + 4H+ → 2H2O Counter Electrode Reference Electrode Sensing Electrode Hydrophobic Membrane Electrolyte Capillary Diffusion Barrier Calibration There are several standards that can be used for calibration. If no capsule press is available ammonium chloride (Cl content 65.97%) is the substance of choice. Moreover, the high solubility of chlorine in water is ideal for preparing standard solutions. Another possible calibration standard could be oil with a defined amount of Cl or if available matrix specific chlorine standards. Usually these standards can be used without accelerants. Figure 6, for example, shows a typical calibration curve, obtained by a coal standard with 0.11% Cl on the rapid CS cube with Cl-option. Figure 3. Functional principle of the EC cell Figure 4. The electrons produced in this reaction lower the current between working and reference electrode, which is a measure for the HCl concentration in the carrier gas. This detection method can be described as amperometric detection. The capillary diffusion barrier is basically a hole whose diameter determines the sensitivity of the cell. The electrolyte is a concentrated, non-oxidizing acid. A schematic diagram of the electrochemical cell is shown in Figure 3. Chemistry dictates that the ECD cell can also be affected by high concentrations of HBr, but this is rarely seen in practice.   • 4. Typical applications The chlorine detection option is optimized for applications in the area of fuel, residual fuel, biomass, waste, soil, along with others. Due to limitations in precision and accuracy, it is not recommended to use the Cl-option for classical elemental analysis (e.g. to determine the Cl content in pure chemicals).
