What is Scrapie????
* It is neuro-degenerative disaese caused by prions
* Prions replicate by converting a normal cellular protein into copies of prions
* Prions are non-conventional disease agents
* It can confuse with Mad Cow Disease
Etiology
Host Species
* Sheep
* Goat
* Rat & Mice
* Monkey & Lab animals
Geographical Distribution
* Worldwide
* More in developing countries
Transmission
* Well understood in sheep
* Can transmit to goats if we keep them in the herd of sheep
* Can transmit to already present sheeps if we keep foreign infected breed in our flock
* Can be transmitted to the race during pregnancy or at the time of birth from dam through placenta or
reproductive tract because Prions may be present there
* Genetically transmitted or through urine of the sheep
* Prions & Virions both can transmit it into the race
Symptoms
* 1st symptom is that the affected sheep will be apart from the flock & will be in front to lead the herd or at the
end to trail the herd when the herd is driven
* As the disease progress animals have high-stepping or trembling
* Convulsions
* Scraping body with the wall
* Drink small quantities of water often
* Blindness
Treatment
* No treatment
* Not zoonotic disease
Control
* Keep goats & sheep in separate flocks
* Don't mix foreign breeds with native ones
* Use scrapie-resistant breeds to reduce risk
* Cull the affected sheep

* Clinical sign & symptoms
* Laboratory test
* Scrapie is usually confirmed by detecting PrPSc (prions) in CNS
