2. Introduction
• Merriam-Webster → “the communication or
expression of thoughts in spoken words”
• Every speech or presentation has two main
aspects:
– WHAT you say (content)
– HOW you say it (delivery)
3. You have a lot of control over the content,
because you can plan out what to say.
Be careful about making your delivery
effective. For this, you might keep in mind the
following advices:
• make it easy for the listener to follow your
ideas.
• “signpost” your speech → say how your
speech will be divided up
4. • think about a strong first sentence that will
capture the attention of the listener.
• give the impression that you are well-
prepared and have something interesting to
say.
• end with a strong sentence.
• practice your speech before the big day.
• speak loudly and clearly.
5. • it is important that every listener feels you are talking
to him or her personally.
– Look around the audience and don't focus on only one
focal point.
– Make eye contact with members of your audience.
– Move your eyes around your audience so that everyone
feels included in the presentation.
6. • Set a timer.
– You should know how long your speech needs to
be.
– Maybe you need to shorten it or lengthen it.
– Include time for a Q&A period if appropriate.
• be careful not to distract your listeners
• include visual material with your speech
