Kinship

3. What is ‫? صلة الرحم‬
• To maintain the ties of kinship
• Kinship includes : it refers to all blood
relatives – not relatives through
breastfeeding – on both the father’s
side and the mother’s side
"Worship Allâh and do not associate anything with
Him. Be good to your parents and relatives…“
[an-Nisâ´ (4): 36]

4. Who are the kindred (arhaam) with whom one must
uphold the ties of kinship?
• The kindred (arhaam) are the blood relatives on your
mother’s and father’s sides.
“But kindred by blood are nearer to
one another (regarding inheritance)
in the decree ordained by Allaah”
[al-Anfaal 8:57; al-Ahzaab 33:6]

5. Upholding the ties of kinship is obligatory to the
extent that one is able to do it
• It is obligatory to the extent that one is able to do it, starting with
the closest and then the next closest.
• Severing the ties of kinship is a major sin as seen in Surah
Muhammad (47:22 - 23 ): “Would you then, if you were given the
authority, do mischief in the land, and sever your ties of kinship?
Such are they whom Allâh has cursed, so that He has made them
deaf and blinded their sight.”

6. Ending disputes and fixing ties with Kinship
• In many cases, this kind of rigid and harsh-hearted attitude is
temporary and does not last for long
• The person who has cut off ties of kinship should be reminded of
the rights of his relatives
• the one who undertakes to reconcile between them will earn the
reward mentioned in the Surah Al-Nisaa (4:114)
