Wedding Superstitions:
● It is not a good idea to have your wedding in a leap year! It is not going to
work well for the couple! Leap years bring bad luck to newly-wed couples!

● The groom cannot see the bride before the wedding, especially if she’s
wearing her wedding dress! He can only see her during the wedding
ceremony!
● The bride writes the names of her friends that are not married at the
bottom of her show. The name of the friend that is erased first shows
who is going to be the next to get married!

● During the wedding ceremony, when the priest says that “the woman
should be afraid of the man” (meaning that she should respect the
man), the woman steps on the man’s shoe to show him that she will
not be inferior in the mariage.
● After the wedding ceremony, we cut the wicks of the wedding candles
because we believe that, if anyone else takes them, they can do
magic with them and lead the couple to separation.
● The wedding bed is made from friends of the coupe that are not
4. married. When they make the bed, they throw a baby boy on top of
it for good luck!
● If you are not married and you put the wedding candies under your
pillow, you will dream of the person that you are going to get married
to in the future!
● After the wedding, the bride throws her bouquet of flowers to her
friends that are not married. The one who catches it, is the one who is
going to get married next!
● When the wedding is over the guests throw rice and flowers to the
couple, hoping this way that their marriage will have deep roots (the word
‘rice’ and ‘root’ sound similar in Greek)!

5. Funeral Superstitions:
● When someone dies, we cover all the glass surfaces with a piece of cloth
because we believe that, if the dead person reflects himself/herself on
one, then somebody else will soon die and follow him/her.
● When someone dies with a smile on his/her face, Greek people believe
that someone else in the family is going to die, too.
● When the dead person leaves the house to go to the church for the
funeral, we break a plate making noise, to scare away death and not allow
it to come back for another member of the family.
● In some places, the dead person must wear new shoes, because it is bad
luck for his/her family if they choose old shoes for him/her.
