Jesus' Parable of the Tares Explained
1. Parable Two
(First parable, Matt 13:18 parable of the sower. Luke 8:11 The seed is
the word of God.)
Jesus tells the parable of the tares
Mat. 13:24-30
The key to the parable:
Matt 13:37-39
37 He answeredand said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the
Son of man;
38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom;
but the tares are the children of the wicked one;
39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the
world; and the reapers are the angels.
The parable: Mat. 13:24-30
24 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven
is likenedunto a man which sowed good seed in his field: [vs 37
the Son of
man]
The Son of man sowed the children of the kingdomin the world.
25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the
wheat, and went his way.
Men slept (“watch men”)
Isa 62:6 I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall
never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the
LORD, keep not silence,
2. Isa 56:10 His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all
dumb dogs, they cannotbark; sleeping, lying down, lovingto
slumber.
His enemy came (Matt 13:39 The enemy … is the devil)
26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then
appeared the tares also.
Blade that broughtforth fruit
Matt 3:7-8 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and
Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of
vipers, who hath warnedyou to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
John 19:6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him,
they criedout, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them,
Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
The tares (Matt 13:38 the tares are the children of the wicked one;)
John 8:13 The Pharisees therefore saidunto him, Thou bearest
recordof thyself; thy recordis not true.
John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father
ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in
the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he
speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
2Cor 11:13-15 13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers,
transformingthemselves into the apostles of Christ.
14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformedinto an angel of
light.
15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed
as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be accordingto
their works.
3. 27 So the servants (v25 “watch men”) of the householder came and said
unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then
hath it tares?
Servants
Acts 2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour
out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
Acts 4:25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why
did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?
Acts 4:29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto
thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,
Rom 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle,
separatedunto the gospel of God,
Rom 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to
obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto
death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto
him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the
wheat with them.
30 Let both grow together until the end of the world (harvest): and in the
time of the end of the world (harvest) I will say to the angels (reapers),
Gather ye together first the children of the wicked one (tares), and bind
them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
(The barn is a safe place for wheat after the harvest)
Rev 14:14-19
Mid Trib. Rapture
4. 14 And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like
unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand
a sharpsickle.
15 And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to
him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is
come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.
16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the
earth was reaped.
The end of the world Mat. 13:39
(Children of the kingdomthat
endureto the “end” shall be saved)
17 And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also
having a sharp sickle.
18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over
fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying,
Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth;
for her grapes are fully ripe.
19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine
of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.
Parable of the mustard seed
Matt 13
31 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven
is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:
32 Which indeedis the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the
greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air
come and lodge in the branches thereof.
Mustard seed
Matt 17:20 If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed,
5. Field
Matt 13:38 The field is the world;
Becometh a tree
Trees in Scripture are assorted with human character.
The bay tree is wicked.
The palm tree is righteous.
A fig tree is Self-righteousness.
Israel is an olive tree.
Birds lodging in the branches
The birds are devils accordingto Jesus (Matt. 13:19; Mark 4:4–5, 15;
Luke 8:5–12).
Mark 4:4 4 And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way
side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.
Matt 13:19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and
understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth
away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which receivedseed
by the way side.
Mark 4:15 And these are they by the way side, where the word is
sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and
taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.
Luke 8:5-12 5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed,
some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of
the air devoured it.
11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil,
and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe
and be saved.
Becometh a tree
This tree is a type of Antichristand his kingdom
6. Dan 4:10-12 10 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and
behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great.
11 The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reachedunto
heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth:
12 The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was
meat for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the fowls of
the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof, and all flesh was fed of it.
Dan 4:20 The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose
height reachedunto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth;
Dan 4:22 It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy
greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the
end of the earth.
Rev 18:1-3 1 And after these things I saw another angel come down from
heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightenedwith his glory.
2 And he cried mightilywith a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is
fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of
every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean andhateful bird.
3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and
the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the
merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her
delicacies.
Matt 10:16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye
therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
Ezek 31:2-3 2 Son of man, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to his
multitude; Whom art thou like in thy greatness?
3 Behold, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon with fair branches, andwith
a shadowingshroud, and of an high stature; and his top was among the
thick boughs.
7. Ezek 31:5-6 5 Therefore his height was exalted above all the trees of the
field, and his boughs were multiplied, and his branches became long
because of the multitude of waters, when he shot forth.
6 All the fowls of heaven made their nests in his boughs, and under his
branches did all the beasts of the field bringforth their young, and under
his shadow dwelt all great nations.
10 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast lifted up thyself
in height, and he hath shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his
heart is lifted up in his height;
12 And strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left
him: upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and
his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the people of the
earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him.
Ezek 28:5-7 5 By thy great wisdom and by thy traffickhast thou
increasedthy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:
6 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast set thine
heart as the heart of God;
7 Behold, therefore I will bring strangers upon thee, the terrible of
the nations: and they shall draw their swords againstthe beauty of
thy wisdom, and they shall defile thy brightness.
