1. IONIC BONDING
Devon Lynne and Joseph Chernak
IONIC BONDING IS THE SHARING OF ELECTRONS
BETWEEN CATIONS AND ANIONS.
2. The Basics
Ionic bonding involves ions which are formed when atoms gain or lose
valence electrons. All atoms want to be stable thus resulting in them
aspiring to have a total of 8 electrons in their outer shell.

Opposites attract!
Cations (+) and anions (-) always pair up when forming a bond.
When balancing ionic equations, you must take the oxidation number
into account.
P.S. Many elements have MULTIPLE oxidation numbers, so be careful to
take note when doing these problems.
3. More info
Metals are always the cation (+) except in the case of ammonium
(nonmetal), which is the only polyatomic ion with a positive oxidation
number.
(Review: Polyatomic ions are combined elements that act as one)
