4. PI in very large groups (300+ students)
Several reasons preventing widespread use of PI in very large groups
1.High one-off expenditure
2.Catalog of questions
3.Clickers
4.Costs
5.Installation
6.Configuration
7.Exclusive use
INGO: Peer Instruction for very large groups
5. 1. High one-off expenditure
An existing course design must be
adapted to the use of the PI method.
INGO: Peer Instruction for very large groups
6. 2. Catalog of questions
Except for some areas of natural science
there are no existing and freely available
or purchasable catalogs of questions that
can be used with the PI method
INGO: Peer Instruction for very large groups
7. 3. Clickers
Distributing and collecting the clickers in
courses with about 100 students is very
complex; at present it is impossible in
courses with over 250 students. The risk
that clickers are forgotten, lost or taken is
rising with increasing group size.

8. 4. Costs
The clickers and especially the receiving
device are very expensive.

9. 5. Installation
First, an extensive installation of software
on the laptop of the lecturer is required. In
addition, the software installation is not
possible for all operating systems and the
integration of the application in Microsoft
PowerPoint does not work in all existing
versions of Microsoft Office

10. 6. Configuration
The preparation of the very detailed
configurable software for the usage in a
lecture causes high setup costs for
lecturers. Moreover, the
usage of the software cannot be adapted
dynamically during the lecture.
INGO: Peer Instruction for very large groups
11. 7. Exclusive use
The use is exclusive, i.e. when the clicker
are being used in a lecture, they cannot
be used in another lecture or course.
