Sean Markey from Wolfgang Digital's talk on SEO at BloggerConf 2017. Here he discusses 3 essential considerations related to SEO that all bloggers should have in their toolkit.
2. What is SEO?
“Search Engine Optimisation.”
It is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial”
or “natural” search results on search engines.
4. Taking Control of Your SERP Listings
• Page Titles
- Should be 50 to 70 characters
- Keyword near beginning
- Brand to the back
• URLS
- 100 characters or less
- No funky characters (?!$€^&*¦¬)
- ‘Slug’ should be 4 to 6 words
• Meta Descriptions
- 100 to 155 characters
- Searched keywords will be bolded
- Include a Call-To-Action if possible
• Helpful Tools
- Yoast SEO & SEO Mofo
6. s Duplicate Content Still A Problem?
• Google very rarely gives out manually duplicate
content penalties these days.
• Instead, they are handled algorithmically, with
Duplicate Content deemed a negative ranking
signal.
• If using Press Releases for content, you’ll rank
better if you put a fresh spin on it.
The more unique the better.
• If you want to syndicate your content to another site,
make sure that they point a Canonical Tag to your
original, preferably with a backlink.
8. Internal Linking
• It helps spread authority to the pages you want to
rank
• Click-through helps the linked pages rank better for
SEO
• It also increases users’ time spent on site and total
number of pages viewed
• Try to be varied in terms of anchor text and include a
variation of a targeted keyword if possible.
• Automating internal linking is seen as being spammy
by Google.
• Internal links should open in the same tab.
9. Linking to Other Sites
• External links should open in a new tab.
• Linking to relevant & authoritative sites can
have long-term SEO benefits.
• Linking to irrelevant / poor sites can be a
negative ranking signal.
• If there is a commercial interest in a link (e.g.
it has been paid for), it should be set to ‘no
follow’.
• According to the ASAI, Affiliate Links must be
disclosed.
Before the internet, business used yellow pages. The business that appeared first usually got the call. They were listed alphabetically, so business named themselves to appear first. A1 plumbing, A* pizza etc.
That doesn’t mean the 1st business was the best, or most relevant, just had a clever name.
Now we use search engines to accomplish the same task
This is the SERP, or search engine results page.
Most search results look like this but may have different elements in place.
Some searches can have these elements, some do not.
This is the search box, at the top of the page, containing your search term. The box is dynamic, it will display different functions depending on the search type.
Right now it’s showing a microphone, it’s there for the option of a voice search, this is more common on mobile. If we conducted an image search there would be a camera icon, prompting us to upload a picture or search an image URL.

Under the search box are the advanced search options. These can modify your search for images, videos, sites only from your home country or date.
Below that is the number of pages that match your search, this is the number of pages Google has in its cache, not the total number of pages on the web.
There is a humble brag about how quickly they served these results.
