Benjamin Sheares was Singapore's second president who served from 1971 until his death in 1981. He was the first Singaporean doctor to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology and became a professor at the University of Malaya. Sheares led a humble life as president and secretly donated his entire presidential salary to the poor. He was well-respected among Singaporeans and left a lasting legacy through several landmarks and institutions named after him.
