District of Pekan and Pahang River – An Overview.

Located on the banks of the Pahang River 50 km south of Kuantan, Pekan
is the royal town of the Malaysian state of Pahang Darul Makmur. Its name
comes from a flower, the Bunga Pekan.

According to the old folk, the Bunga Pekan flower grows wild at the banks
of Pahang River. Pekan town is said to have existed since the 17th
century. Several Arab and Chinese writers mentioned Pekan.

Pahang River with 459 km in length is the longest river on the Malay
Peninsula. The river begins at the confluence of Jelai and Tembeling rivers
on the Titiwangsa Mountains and drains into the South China Sea through
its river mouth named Kuala Pahang.
From the mountainous upper reaches of Mount Tahan (2187 m) or locally
called Gunung Tahan, it meanders in a south-easterly direction, passing
Kuala Lipis, Temerloh, Chenor, Mengkarak and turning east at Lepar into
the floodplain of Pekan, Kuala Pahang and drains in the South China Sea.

The banks of Pahang River was settled as early as 1400 by warriors and
seafarers from around the Malay Archipelago such as Aceh, Riau,
Palembang and Sulawesi, forming settlements.

In the old days, Pahang River and Muar River were nearly connected at a
place called Jempol, in Negeri Sembilan. This was because the Serting
River flows into the Bera River, a tributary of the Pahang River.
Jempol River flows into Muar River. Trading boats from River Muar could
continue their journey until they reach Kuala Pahang in Pekan, or Kuala
Lipis to continue into Terengganu, Kelantan or Perak.

At Jalan Penarikan, the locals help will be required to pull the boats
overland. The distance is about 300 meters and because of the pulling of
boats overland, the route is named Penarikan, which is the Malay word for
pulling.

Jalan Penarikan could have been discovered in the 14th century, way
before the days of Malacca Empire. The Arab merchants were actively
trading as well as spreading Islam. When Malacca was discovered, they
came to Malacca for trade and at the same time; the Pasai came to
Malacca too to acquire their daily sundries.
Coincidently, these are the same group of people whom they spread the
religion to. The Arabs complained to the Pasai about the trials and
tribulations of trading in Siam because of the arduous journey through the
Straits of Malacca, then on the Straits of Terbrau before they can continue
the voyage through the South China Sea towards their destination in Siam.

This voyage which takes weeks is extremely lengthy and difficult. After
listening to the grouses of the Arab merchants, the Pasai revealed that
there was a short cut where they could avoid the arduous voyage.
However, they have to pull their boats off shore for a kilometer or so.
Learning of this, the Arabs endeavoured to try out this route.

One day, the Pasai show this route to the Arabs. First, they sailed from
Malacca along the Muar River to reach Jempol River, where they have to
pull the boats on shore for a short distance to get into the Serting River.

They then continue their journey along the Bera River to arrive at Kuala
Tahan from which they proceeded to the South China Sea and finally to
their destination in Siam.

The Arabs discovered that even though they have to go on land for a part
of the journey, it was very much shorter. So from that day onwards, they
decided to use this route and Jalan Penarikan became famous ever since.
Jalan Penarikan has also witnessed many significant events in history. The
famous Malaccan warrior Hang Tuah, while on the run with Tun Teja, used
Jalan Penarikan to flee to Pahang. The last Sultan of Malacca, Sultan
Mahmud Shah, after the conquest of Malacca by the Portuguese had also
used Jalan Penarikan to escape to Pahang.

In the year 1613, a Portuguese officer wrote that he took a boat from the
River Muar to the Pekan, in Pahang and the journey took him six days. A
map produced in 1598 showed that the Muar River and the Pahang River
is connected at a place which is now called Serting, in Jempol Negeri
Sembilan.
Apart from that there were also signs of trading activities, whereby goods
changed hands at this point. These means the boats from Pahang with the
produce they carry stopped here, transact and pick up goods that are east
bound and return back to Pahang. Similarly, boats from Muar, bringing
goods from Malacca and Singapore were brought to Penarikan, where
barter trade occurred.

Jerantut is 15 km from the confluence of Jelai river and Tembeling River.
Temerloh is situated on the confluence between Semantan River and
Pahang River. The town of Pekan, which is Pahang's royal town, is
situated on the southern bank of the river, near the river mouth.
This realm, perhaps, just appeared as a typical coastline of East coast.
Nevertheless there are interesting elements that actually exists here that
could be reappeared and vibrantly established as a new attraction as well
as a magnetic re-branding.

Geographically, District of Pekan is blessed by having distinctive location.
Within its realm, stand the entire nature elements that potentially set
Pekan, specifically Kuala Pahang, a tourist destination.

The picturesque coast line and estuary offer elementary assets for Pekan
to stand as a new tourist attraction. Nevertheless Pekan stands out better
than the rest. The existing of Sungai Pahang appears to be the most
invaluable occurrence that would offers mesmerising journey which allow
tourists, locally and internationally to experience an unforgettable
breakaway, the journey to the Pahang Inland through Sungai Pahang.
Through this journey, sightseers would be experiencing a lot more exotic
activities ranging from river activities to scenic Tasik Chini and exotic
natural encounter at Taman Negara.

District of Pekan makes a great character too through its Bandar Diraja
Pekan. The combination of existing historical elements and the status of
Royal Town make Pekan an essential landmark in this region.

With the latest insertion of Universiti Malaysia Pahang New Campus,
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Pahang Campus and Taman Ilmu, Distict of
Pekan not only appears as a tourist destination, but would emerge as a
new educational hub locally and internationally.

With the combination of this element, the developer believes it can create
District of Pekan, especially Kuala Pahang into a new tourist-educationist
destination that illustrates a new chapter to our national progress.

This development, similar to other developments would essentially
prioritise the social and economical impact of the district of Pekan and
Pahang generally. The developer would conduct a proper study on this
issue in order to ensure it benefits all classes of community group and
minimise negative impacts of the development.

On the other hand, appropriate to the locality and the environmental

concern on the global climate treatment and care to the development.

Recently Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia as a leading institutional that
safeguard public interest through its members contribution has formed a
body to govern & administer the design criteria to fulfil certain
requirements which have been translated into index known as Green
Building Index (GBI).

The developer decides to create a new township that promotes climate
friendly building through indexes that has been set by statutory body.

Therefore, the entire buildings within this development are expected to
meet the set guideline of the building indexes. This mode of development
would be the first in Malaysia that promotes the compliance to GBI and is
also expected to set a new milestone to other development in Malaysia
and South-Asia Region.
DEVELOPMENT CONCEPT & THEME.

  • 4. In order to ensure the intended developments are competitive and viable with surrounding developments, the developer believes that a comprehensive development with careful consideration in parallel to its in-coming effect shall be well taken care. In general it shall offer a comprehensive impact to improve social and economical standing of the region. Therefore, the developer intends to offer its expertise and service to the government in ensuring the aimed development is achieved.
  • 5. District of Pekan and Pahang River – An Overview. Located on the banks of the Pahang River 50 km south of Kuantan, Pekan is the royal town of the Malaysian state of Pahang Darul Makmur. Its name comes from a flower, the Bunga Pekan. According to the old folk, the Bunga Pekan flower grows wild at the banks of Pahang River. Pekan town is said to have existed since the 17th century. Several Arab and Chinese writers mentioned Pekan. Pahang River with 459 km in length is the longest river on the Malay Peninsula. The river begins at the confluence of Jelai and Tembeling rivers on the Titiwangsa Mountains and drains into the South China Sea through its river mouth named Kuala Pahang.
  • 6. From the mountainous upper reaches of Mount Tahan (2187 m) or locally called Gunung Tahan, it meanders in a south-easterly direction, passing Kuala Lipis, Temerloh, Chenor, Mengkarak and turning east at Lepar into the floodplain of Pekan, Kuala Pahang and drains in the South China Sea. The banks of Pahang River was settled as early as 1400 by warriors and seafarers from around the Malay Archipelago such as Aceh, Riau, Palembang and Sulawesi, forming settlements. In the old days, Pahang River and Muar River were nearly connected at a place called Jempol, in Negeri Sembilan. This was because the Serting River flows into the Bera River, a tributary of the Pahang River.
  • 7. Jempol River flows into Muar River. Trading boats from River Muar could continue their journey until they reach Kuala Pahang in Pekan, or Kuala Lipis to continue into Terengganu, Kelantan or Perak. At Jalan Penarikan, the locals help will be required to pull the boats overland. The distance is about 300 meters and because of the pulling of boats overland, the route is named Penarikan, which is the Malay word for pulling. Jalan Penarikan could have been discovered in the 14th century, way before the days of Malacca Empire. The Arab merchants were actively trading as well as spreading Islam. When Malacca was discovered, they came to Malacca for trade and at the same time; the Pasai came to Malacca too to acquire their daily sundries.
  • 8. Coincidently, these are the same group of people whom they spread the religion to. The Arabs complained to the Pasai about the trials and tribulations of trading in Siam because of the arduous journey through the Straits of Malacca, then on the Straits of Terbrau before they can continue the voyage through the South China Sea towards their destination in Siam. This voyage which takes weeks is extremely lengthy and difficult. After listening to the grouses of the Arab merchants, the Pasai revealed that there was a short cut where they could avoid the arduous voyage.
  • 9. However, they have to pull their boats off shore for a kilometer or so. Learning of this, the Arabs endeavoured to try out this route. One day, the Pasai show this route to the Arabs. First, they sailed from Malacca along the Muar River to reach Jempol River, where they have to pull the boats on shore for a short distance to get into the Serting River. They then continue their journey along the Bera River to arrive at Kuala Tahan from which they proceeded to the South China Sea and finally to their destination in Siam. The Arabs discovered that even though they have to go on land for a part of the journey, it was very much shorter. So from that day onwards, they decided to use this route and Jalan Penarikan became famous ever since.
  • 10. Jalan Penarikan has also witnessed many significant events in history. The famous Malaccan warrior Hang Tuah, while on the run with Tun Teja, used Jalan Penarikan to flee to Pahang. The last Sultan of Malacca, Sultan Mahmud Shah, after the conquest of Malacca by the Portuguese had also used Jalan Penarikan to escape to Pahang. In the year 1613, a Portuguese officer wrote that he took a boat from the River Muar to the Pekan, in Pahang and the journey took him six days. A map produced in 1598 showed that the Muar River and the Pahang River is connected at a place which is now called Serting, in Jempol Negeri Sembilan.
  • 11. Apart from that there were also signs of trading activities, whereby goods changed hands at this point. These means the boats from Pahang with the produce they carry stopped here, transact and pick up goods that are east bound and return back to Pahang. Similarly, boats from Muar, bringing goods from Malacca and Singapore were brought to Penarikan, where barter trade occurred. Jerantut is 15 km from the confluence of Jelai river and Tembeling River. Temerloh is situated on the confluence between Semantan River and Pahang River. The town of Pekan, which is Pahang's royal town, is situated on the southern bank of the river, near the river mouth.
  • 12. This realm, perhaps, just appeared as a typical coastline of East coast. Nevertheless there are interesting elements that actually exists here that could be reappeared and vibrantly established as a new attraction as well as a magnetic re-branding. Geographically, District of Pekan is blessed by having distinctive location. Within its realm, stand the entire nature elements that potentially set Pekan, specifically Kuala Pahang, a tourist destination. The picturesque coast line and estuary offer elementary assets for Pekan to stand as a new tourist attraction. Nevertheless Pekan stands out better than the rest. The existing of Sungai Pahang appears to be the most invaluable occurrence that would offers mesmerising journey which allow tourists, locally and internationally to experience an unforgettable breakaway, the journey to the Pahang Inland through Sungai Pahang.
  • 13. Through this journey, sightseers would be experiencing a lot more exotic activities ranging from river activities to scenic Tasik Chini and exotic natural encounter at Taman Negara. District of Pekan makes a great character too through its Bandar Diraja Pekan. The combination of existing historical elements and the status of Royal Town make Pekan an essential landmark in this region. With the latest insertion of Universiti Malaysia Pahang New Campus, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Pahang Campus and Taman Ilmu, Distict of Pekan not only appears as a tourist destination, but would emerge as a new educational hub locally and internationally. With the combination of this element, the developer believes it can create District of Pekan, especially Kuala Pahang into a new tourist-educationist destination that illustrates a new chapter to our national progress.
  • 15. WHY THEY HAVE TO BE AT THIS INSTANT?
  • 16. The Overview This realm, currently just appeared as a typical coastline of east coast. Nevertheless there are interesting elements that actually exist here that would be re-appeared and vibrantly established as a new attraction. The Identified Elements: Educational Centre Tourist centre Coastline River line Natural Lake Historical Natural Resource Highland Land Network Air Network Sea Network River Network “The envisaged development would be characterised to emerge as a „tool‟ to link the entire identified elements.”

The developer would conduct a proper study on this issue in order to ensure it benefits all classes of community group and minimise negative impacts of the development. On the other hand, appropriate to the locality and the environmental value of the site, the developer would critically demonstrate its grave concern on the global climate treatment and care to the development.
  • 20. DEVELOPMENT CONCEPT & THEME. Recently Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia as a leading institutional that safeguard public interest through its members contribution has formed a body to govern & administer the design criteria to fulfil certain requirements which have been translated into index known as Green Building Index (GBI). The developer decides to create a new township that promotes climate friendly building through indexes that has been set by statutory body.
