14. What characterizes the lives of shoe shiners? Many opportunities to get to know society in it’s entirety, with moments for entertainment and the need to grow up early. Living with a vision for the future, even though the money earned through shoe shining is minimum and only covers urgent costs. What does it mean to shine shoes? To be a member of society through honorable work, earning a little and in many cases experiencing social discrimination, while at the same time, living a complex and complete life.

17. Many people confuse shoe shiners with guerrilla groups, but this is far from the truth. Underneath the mask is human potential like any other. Mucha gente confunde a los lustra calzados con grupos guerrilleros pero en realidad no es así. Debajo del pasamontañas existe un potencial humano como cualquier otro.

19. A simple shoe shine box with tools is enough to sustain a boy on the streets who has freedom and is at peace with his work. Solo basta con una simple caja de herramientas para el sostenimiento diario de un niño de la calle que tiene libertad y la paz en lo que realiza.

Many people don’t have enough money to support their families and end up in exploitative jobs with their children working too. Una señora con sus hijos pidiendo dinero en la calle, el hijo mayor va a lustrar calzados por las mañanas. Hay muchos que en su economía no alcanza dinero a su familia, tienen trabajos muy explotados así los niños tienen que trabajar también.

Trabajar en la calle como lustracalzado es luchar dia a dia un en sacrificio lleno de esperanza y ser capaz de emprender con humildad la construcción de un futuro mejor.

Mi compañero de trabajo esta yendo a la fundación después de su jornada de trabajo. Después de trabajar por las calles de la cuidad de La Paz el esta cansado y el sacrificio es compartido con los amigos.

29. Working in the centre of the city gives us the privilege of observing and deciphering things like behaviors and attitudes that many people ignore. El hecho de trabajar en pleno centro de la cuidad se tiene el privilegio de observar y descifrar cosas que muchas gente ignora, como comportamientos y actitudes.

31. The boy next to the garden means hope and renewal, like the flowers come up every year we hope for a better future. He is next to the word ‘glory’ so that the ideas of great people, people who are no longer with us, will always live on. El niño junto al jardín significa esperanza y renovación como las flores para un futuro mejor. A la palabra “gloria” para que siempre vivan los pensamientos de grandes gentes, o gente que ya no están con nosotros.

33. These are my friends with the condors. It caught my attention that they are flying. Son mis amigos donde los cóndores, me llamo la atención que están volando.

35. This man is very dedicated to his work, he was once a shoe shiner and now his standard of living has improved. Este señor trabaja con una seriedad extraordinaria, él también era lustracalzado y he visto que ahora ha subido su nivel de vida.

37. My friend is getting paid for his work. Mi compañero esta recibiendo plata por su trabajo.

39. Working downtown and watching the chaos from a corner, we notice that we are ignored. We shoe shiners may be invisible but we do exist and take an active part in society. Observando desde un rincón del sector de trabajo el caos existente pero al mismo tiempo apreciando como somos ignorados por casi todos. Pero nosotros si existimos y somos parte activa de la sociedad.

41. A boy working in the plaza is found by the police and told to go away. We are always treated poorly by the police, they blame us for any problems. Un niño trabajando en una plaza, el policía le encuentra y le dice que vaya a otro lugar, siempre somos maltratos por las policías, lo único que el policía hace es culpar al niño lustra calzados.

43. Work should be dignified, no matter what the role is. Shoe shiners are not bad people, it’s just a different way to live life. Para mostrar a la sociedad que el trabajado debe ser dignificado sin importar cual sea la función que desempeñe. El lustrar calzado no es malo al contrario es una forma de vivir la vida.

45. The street is not just where we work but also a place to think and come up with ideas for the future. It can be the beginning of a longed-after dream that can come true. La calle no solo es trabajo es también un lugar donde se puede pensar y tener ideas sobre nuestro futuro, es el comienzo de un sueño anhelado y que sí se puede cumplir.

Un adolescente vagabundo esta pensando en su soledad, si la solidaridad estuviera presente en todo lugar, muchos de los niños adolescentes de la calle no estarían desamparados.

55. A woman with her daughter on Sagarnaga street. Many people migrate from Potosí and Oruro to the city to beg in order to have something to eat. Un señora con su hija en la calle Sagarnaga, muchas personas vienen de los departamentos de Potosí y parte de Oruro, principalmente vienen a mendigar para llevarse algo de comer en la boca.

65. A girl alone in the center of the city. Solitude and sadness are not important as long as we have the right to live and have a home. Una niña sola esta en pleno centro de la ciudad, no importa la soledad y la tristeza para tener el derecho de vivir y tener un hogar.

67. Two boys with different identities but with the same problem of poverty can share their experiences and meet the future together. Dos compañeros con distintas identidades pero con el mismo problema de pobreza con la que podemos compartir y enfrentar el presente y el futuro.

69. These men are drinking and offering their services as shoe shiners at the same time. In the streets, there are many people who have become alcholics and adults who make children drink. If the kids don’t want to they punish them by hitting them or taking away their shoe shine boxes. Ellos están bebiendo y al mismo tiempo ofreciendo para lustrar. En la calle hay mucha influencia de bebidas alcohólicas; hay personas que son mayores, ellos a los niños les hace tomar bebidas sino les pega o quita sus cosas de lustrar.
