How to setup a profitable email follow-up series
1. How To Set Up A Profitable Email
Follow-Up Series
by YourIMFriend
After creating hundreds of successful and profitable email
marketing campaigns, automated email-based businesses and
highly profitable follow-up series, I’ve come up with the list of
MUST-HAVE emails in your follow-up campaign.
Here is the list of ten follow-up emails that every autoresponder
series should have:
1. Verify subscription email. While many marketers would say that your choice
should be a single opt-in list, my thoughts are that you should do as much as you
can to sleep calm at night.
If a potential subscriber has to verify and confirm his wish to subscribe to your list,
you will get a cleaner list, less spam complaints, more engaging subscribers and, in
many cases, more responsive tribe of subscribers.
That’s why my choice is to send a “confirm your subscription” email before I send
any specific content to my subscribers. And I recommend you to have the same first
email in your sequence.
You can use this “verify subscription” email to simply ask people to confirm their
subscription, but you can also use it to “pre-sell” your newsletter or mailing list to
new subscribers.
2. Welcome email. Obviously, the first email you want to send to your subscribers is
the “welcome email”, in which you will thank them for subscribing to your
newsletter.
In this email message you will also want to give them a download link to content
promised on your squeeze page, which can be a free report, ebook, video, audio,
interview, or anything else.
2. This email message can also be used to give your subscribers a quick overview of
what they can expect from your newsletter, what will you be covering in upcoming
emails, what will be the frequency of your emails, and so on.
On top of that, in this email you can (and should) include a link to any of your
product or service - one that you were promoting as a One-Time-Offer or special
offer that people saw after signing up on your squeeze page.
3. Personal email. The main point of building a list should be to build a relationship
with your subscribers. That’s how you will get a responsive and engaged list.
So, what I usually do in my follow-up sequences is that I’m including a “personal
email” in which I again thank them for subscribing to my mailing list or newsletter,
and give them an additional information about my content and intentions.
This email message in your sequence works extremely well if you’re selling any
type of product or service, and your mailing list is actually “product based”. Then
personal email from creator or owner makes perfect sense.
Simple Ways To Increase The Engagement, Trust And Responsiveness
Of Your Subscribers
4. Follow-up tip or resource email. As we already said, your goal with any
newsletter or mailing list is to build relationship with your list, trust, engagement
and other positive feelings.
One way to do that is to provide your list with free and useful content, and use that
content to show your knowledge, expertise, good will to help them with their
problems, and so on.
That’s why one of the first email messages I send to my list is one that contains
additional (or follow-up) tip, advice or additional resource.
With that I’m showing my subscribers that I care about them, that I want to help
them, that I know what I’m talking about and that “squeezing some bucks” from
their pockets is not my only intention.
That’s how you can build relationship and trust, which can later be used to make
them more willing to buy something from you.
5. Affiliate promotion email. Of course, with every mailing list or newsletter, your
goal is to start making some money as soon as possible. And, no matter if you’re
3. selling your own product or not, affiliate promotions are always a good way to
make money.
However, we don’t want to make it so obvious that we are trying to sell something.
That’s why I like to incorporate my affiliate promotions in some type of personal or
helpful email.
So, what I will do in most cases is to send an email that asks subscribers if they had
a chance to check out the free resources I’ve already sent them, did they like it or
find interesting and useful, do they have any questions about it, and so on.
Then, I would include a link to the product I’m promoting as an affiliate in the
signature or P.S. part.
I would make sure that’s the only link in my email, so subscribers don’t have any
other option than to click that link or delete my email.
And this works very good. It doesn’t look like I’m selling them something, since the
whole body of my message is about their feelings, but there is still a link that makes
me money.
6. Another follow-up tip or resource email. Again, it’s about building a relationship
with your subscribers. So, it’s always good to over-deliver with useful content and
help.
I like to do that with another email that would include free additional tip or free
resource. And again, this can be done in a smart and clever way. Like this...
No matter what niche you’re in, there are always some questions that your market
will have. In general, there are always couple of big or very important questions.
You can use that by creating additional free resource (report, article, ebook, video,
or whatever) that will answer one of those “big” questions. And then you simply
send them that resource as a follow-up gift.
Of course, you can add links to your own products or to affiliate products in that
additional resource, especially if it’s a report or ebook. That way you can make
some money off of that free resource, while your subscribers will love to get
additional tip or advice for free.
7. Discount email. If you’re selling any type of product or service, and your
subscribers didn’t purchase it after first couple of emails, you should definitely
include a discount email in your follow-up sequence.
4. In this email you simply give them an option to purchase your product with a nice
discount. Since people love discounts, and by now they already had a chance to see
that you’re an expert in your field who cares about his subscribers, they are more
likely to grab this chance and purchase your product.
Keep in mind that this doesn’t need to be a discount per se. It could also be some
type of a bonus, especially if you’re promoting an affiliate offer, or some type of a
special deal that would make them more willing to buy whatever you’re selling.
And A Way To Increase Your Bottom Line And Profits...
8. Survey email. This could be one of the most important emails in your follow-up
sequence, and here is why:
Whatever you’re selling or doing online, you should always know what your target
audience is looking for. When you know that, it’s easier for you to give them exactly
that - which will then increase your profits.
That’s why surveys are extremely important and you want to have one in your
funnel. You can simply create surveys with tools like SurveyMonkey, or even easier,
with Google Forms.
Then in this email you simply send your subscribers a link to your survey and ask
them to take a minute or two to answer on couple of questions.
There will always be people who will ignore your request, but there will also be
some who will take the time to provide you with their opinions.
Based on their answers, you will get a better overview of what they want and need,
and based on that you will be able to “fix” your product or funnel to fulfill their
wishes and needs.
9. Email with discount reminder and testimonials. Most people won’t buy
immediately, and that’s something we have to accept. That’s why we need to
provide them with multiple chances to buy, whenever we can.
One thing that can make people buy is discounted price. In our funnel we have
already had an email with announced discount, but it’s always good to remind
people about it.
5. Also, people like to hear testimonials from other people who already tried that
specific product or service. If they see that other people like the product, they will
be more willing to try it themselves.
So, one email that I always like to include in my follow-up sequence is the one that
will politely remind them about a discount I’m running, or about a special offer I’m
presenting, and one that will give them a couple of testimonials from my previous
buyers.
10. Discount expiring email. There is a valid reason why people positively react on
countdown timers and limited offers. If there is a fear that something could be gone
forever, they are more likely to grab it before the deadline.
That’s why I like to limit my discounts. They are available for a specific amount of
time, and at some point they will no longer be available. And I want to remind my
subscribers about that.
So, one email in my sequence is always about the fact that discount I’m offering to
them (or a bonus, special offer, or whatever else) is expiring and they need to act
fast if they want to grab it.
This approach works pretty well and can definitely bring in additional sales.
11. Last chance email. Then, after 10 emails or so, I’m giving them last chance to
purchase my product, or whatever I’m promoting. These 10 or so emails can be
scheduled over 30 days or so, and if they don’t buy in that time, I’m not losing any
more of my time on them.
Of course, in my email marketing I would always have 2 lists - one for subscribers,
one for buyers. When someone buys a product from me, he or she is automatically
transferred to my “buyers” list, to which I’m giving more of my time and effort.
So, in this last email in my follow-up sequence, I’m giving them the last chance to
buy my product and get on that “premium” list of buyers. If they don’t take on that
last offer, I would simply forget about them.
To be honest, I won’t really forget about them, but I will stop being polite to them.
That list will from that point on receive nothing else than just promotional emails,
for either my own products or affiliate products.
Why? Because they simply didn’t show us serious and profitable prospects. I could
say that they are just freebie seekers, so they don’t deserve any more of my time.
6. I’m basically done with them and the only thing left for me is to send them
promotional emails and try to squeeze some bucks from them - until they
unsubscribe.
12. The important part - automation. Now, important part of this follow-up sequence
is automation. You don’t want to lose too much time on worrying about this
sequence - you want to set it up once and leave it to work for you.
Obviously, you would work on getting more traffic to your squeeze page, but after
that everything is on your follow-up sequence or, as I like to call it, an email funnel.
This set of 10 emails has shown as the best combination for turning subscribers into
buyers, and moving them from “freebie list” to “buyers list”, to which you will then
give more of your time, energy, effort, resources, and so on.
The Best Results With Only 3 Things!
There are basically three things you need to put an email funnel like this into place, and
for the end of this report I want to share these three things with you.
First thing is obviously your autoresponderas a basic tool you need to have in your
online business to store a list of your subscribers. Autoresponder will allow you to load
up all these emails into your follow-up sequence and set it up so they go out
automatically on a defined schedule.
The second thing you need is a squeeze page which is used to collect your opt-ins. This
is the page on which you will present your visitors with a special free offer that will
(hopefully) make them willing to give you their email address in exchange for your free
offer.
Although you can create it by yourself (if you know HTML, CSS and web design), it’s
much easier to use professional tools - like ClickFunnels, a web-based tool that allows
you to create and host professionally looking squeeze pages and other types of
marketing pages. ClickFunnels is now the only tool I’m using to create all of my money
pages.
And the third thing is a little bit of time to write and compile this type of automated
follow-up funnel. You need to sit down and simply write these emails to fit your niche
or your product. They don’t need to be long - 300 to 500 words per email are enough.
You could need some additional tools, like Google Forms or SurveyMonkey to run your
surveys, but in general you just need to write these 10 or so emails, by following my
advice from this report, and you will be on a good path to pretty much automate your
profits.
7. SPECIAL: Get 30-day Trial With The Best Autoresponder Tool
On The Planet
As we already said, having your own list of people interested in your niche or
subject is of huge importance for your online success. In general, every subscriber is
worth anywhere between $1 to $10 per month, based on the quality of the list, niche,
your marketing methods, copywriting abilities, spending habits in chosen niche, etc.
So, do the math for yourself. Having a 1,000 subscribers can mean earning anywhere
from $1,000 to $10,000 per month, based on the things we have said earlier. In other
words, it is in your own interest to start building your mailing list as soon as
possible.
Now, logically, you can’t have your own list if you don’t have your own
autoresponder account. Autoresponder service is one that will allow you to host and
manage your list, do email marketing, create automatic follow-up series, send email
messages to your list, and more.
It’s no secret that my favorite autoresponder service is GetResponse. I have tried
