3. INTRODUCTION TO TIPU SULTAN
• Tipu Sultan was born on 10 December 1750 in
Devanhalli.
• His real name was Fatah Ali Khan Shahab.
• He came to the throne at the age of 32.
• He was brave and well trained and intelligent.
• He hate British and defeat them many times.
• He had given the title of Tiger of Mysore.
4. MYSORE WARS AND TREATY OF VERSAILLES
AND MANGALORE
• In 1761 Haidar Ali became ruler.
• In 1766 East India Company joined Nizam of Hyderabad.
• In 1768 Nizam leave British alone against Haidar Ali.
• In 1769 Haidar Ali appear in madras and dictated peace.
5. SECOND MYSORE WAR AND TREATY OF
VERSAILLES
• In second war, the French deserted Tipu Sultan after signing treaty of Versailles.
• Haidar Ali joined forces with Marathas in 1780.
• The tide was turned by the dispatch of British help from Calcutta and by the death of
Haidar Ali in December 1782.
6. TREATY OF MANGALORE
• It was signed between Tipu Sultan and East India Company on 11 March 1784.
• It was signed in Mangalore and brought an end to the second Anglo-Mysore War.
• In this treaty both give their land and prisoners back.
7. THIRD MYSORE WAR
• This war began in 1790, when Lord Cornwallis dropped Tippu's name from the lists of
the company's friends.
• Tippu was checked at Seringapatam and forced to give his half of the Kingdom to
Nizam and East India Company in 1792.
8. FOURTH MYSORE WAR
• This war was undertaken by Governor Lord Morning ton on the plea that Tippu was
receiving help from France.
• British troops attacked Seringapatam in May 1799.
• Tipu died in the fighting sword in hand and his troops were destroyed.
9. BATTLE OF POLLILUR
• The battle of Pollilur took place in 1780 at Pollilur.
• It was a part of second Mysore war.
• Tippu was dispatched with 10000 men and 18 guns.
• Out of 360 Europeans about 200 were captured alive.
• The sepoys who were about 3800 men suffered very high casualties.
10. SIEGE OF FORT OF SERINGAPATAM
• In 1792 it was the part of third Mysore war.
• British East India company and British army forces ,along with the allied forces of
Maratha and the Nizam arrived there on 5 February 1792.
• After less than 3 weeks of battle, Tippu was forced to sign treaty of Seringapatam on
March1.
11. DEATH
• There were 26000 men of company, 4000 Europeans,16000 of Nizam.
• British had 50000 men and Tipu Sultan had 30000 men.
• French advisers told Tippu to escape but he replied better to live one day as a tiger
than a thousand years as a sheep.
• Tipu Sultan died on 4 may and is buried at Gumaz next to his father grave.
