Editor's Notes
Why do people want to be part of website communities? The things that I will mention might sound obvious to some but you would be surprised how many people have no idea and say, why not just create a Facebook group or join another social network. If you have ever worked for an employee that thinks social networks should be banned at work, then you will understand the importance of online communities built outside of Facebook. I have worked with several companies where Facebook and Twitter are banned. People are social creatures, people join online communities to interact with others who have a similar interest. Tamrial Foundry is an example of a community about an interest. Hello eco living would be an example of a community built around a cause. People who are passionate or interested in connecting with others about eco living can do so at hello eco living. An example of a community based around a similar lifestyle would be Little Sketchers, people with kids interested in art would join such a community. When we talk about people being part of an organization and want to stay connected we can take a look at the CUNY site as an example. Language can be a factor in people joining a community, people from a specific region who speak a certain language join communities where people speak the same language. Places like Facebook or Twitter can get distracting if people want to focus on a specific topic, joining a community outside of the big social networks where people are for a specific topic can help you focus on that topic without external distraction. Privacy. I manage different pages for a alternative fitness company and pole dancing happens to be one of the class offerings. Many people want to keep the fact they practice pole dancing secret from their family members because they don’t want to be confused with strippers. When you take such a class it comes with concequences so a privacy issue arises. Private pole communities bring people together and out of the eyes of public critique.
If you want your community members to be able to upload photos to their status updates, rtMedia will do it. It will also create a media tab on user profiles where their uploaded media will appear.
